Ruth BUDD Obituary

RUTH JUNE BUDD
June 20, 1924–June 30, 2021

Portrait of Ruth Budd, April 1982, from the City of Toronto Archives, Fonds 329, Series 1569, File 429

The family of Ruth Budd, née Ross, is sad to announce her death, at age 97, at home in Toronto, after a brief illness.

A retired Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) musician, Ruth was born in Winnipeg, MB to parents Jack Ross and Olive (née Barrett), and was pre-deceased by her parents and her siblings, Pearl, Alan, and Rita. With oboist (ex)husband Philip Budd (deceased), Ruth had two children, son Kevin and daughter Gillian (deceased 2017).

Ruth leaves to mourn son Kevin (and family); two grandsons, James (and family) and Kevin (and friend); one great-grandson; extended family; and an extraordinary number of friends of all ages.

Ruth was Canada's first professional female bassist. She was a much-loved member of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (1947–1952 and 1964–1989) where she spent most of her career. She had also been a member of the symphony orchestras of Vancouver, Halifax, Hart House, the CBC, and a musician for the Canadian Opera Company, the National Ballet of Canada, and the Stratford Festival Orchestra. Interested in labour relations, Ruth was the founding chair of the Organization of Canadian Symphony Musicians. In retirement, she founded the Toronto Senior Strings and the Christie Gardens Chorale, and was a member of the Toronto Mandolin Orchestra (Shevchenko). Under the auspices of the TSO Education Program, she gave hundreds of presentations to school groups. She was affiliated with the Toronto Musicians' Association and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and received the YWCA Toronto Women of Distinction Award (Arts).

Ruth's life was rich with friendships and with hands-on activities. In addition to being a classical musician, Ruth was a doer and a maker: she was a labour negotiator, a trailblazer for women in the arts, an accomplished potter, a folk musician, a film club member, and a children's music educator.

In her long and vibrant life, two stories stand out. When told by a high school music teacher that girls couldn't play the double bass, she immediately took up the gauntlet, transferring her violin skills to the bass and, within a month, winning a prize. This youthful challenge was the catalyst for an exemplary career as a bassist--Canada's first professional female bassist.

Ruth was one of the "Symphony Six" TSO musicians who, suspected of being "Reds" during the Cold War, were barred for life from entry into the United States. This meant that the TSO of the era could not tour in the US with musicians who had been blacklisted, and so the six musicians were dropped from the Symphony--a controversial decision for which the TSO received much public criticism. When the Cold War abated, the TSO re-hired Ruth in 1964, where she continued as a beloved member of the orchestra until her retirement in 1989. The US entry restriction was finally revoked in the 1970s.

The family thanks Christie Gardens Wellness Centre and the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care team, who helped her through her short illness. A very special and heartfelt thanks to Ruth's closest friends, whose friendship, help, and support are beyond measure.

In lieu of flowers, friends may wish to honour her memory with a donation to a cause she valued, such as: Toronto Symphony Orchestra (tso.ca/tribute), Indspire Indigenous education (indspire.ca), or CAMH (camh.ca). Online condolences can be sent to aftercare.org. Ruth's extraordinary life will be celebrated in person, when Covid-19 restrictions allow.

If it wasn't for Ruth I would not be
If It wasn't for my family I would not see..
Music was her life but she'd never forgotten about the friends and family
Music is life, her life will be continued through all the musicians, and all those she's crossed paths with

Music is life, life is ment to be given, we give life to those in need as we walk the street tapping the beats beneath our feet.

3 photos I can help build the memorial with;
1. A painting done of her
2. A Shevchenko Orchestra photo
3. A pic of her, her daughter;Gillian, son in law Robert, and her son Kevin

We were so shocked to hear of Ruth's passing. The last time we spoke to her was April of last year. We had a great conversation about her visits to Newfoundland. She was a dear friend from many years ago. We tried to call her on Christmas and when the phone said no longer in service, we checked the obits. We had been saying for months, " We have to call Ruth".
Deepest condolences to Kevin, her family and friends of which there were many. We will hold her in our hearts.
Note to self, if you feel the urge to call an old friend, do so before it is to late. Goodbye my friend. RIP!

Ruth had a huge influence on me in my younger years. I so regretted failing to keep in touch with her and had hoped to see her again. She was a remarkable woman, the sort you remember vividly all your life.

Ruth was the best neighbour ever!
Over the years, she became a good friend and an inspiration.
At 97, one would think that her passing should not be surprising. However, it was to us, as it seemed she would live forever. We will always remember her in our hearts.
Thank you Ruth!

Truly my oldest Canadian friend. Ruth took me under her wise wings when I first arrived to play in the Toronto Symphony in 1965. Our friendship continued until a few days before she exited this world, with our final conversation being about, on our recent June Birthdays, we were finally the same age. Ruth being 97, and I , 79. We had a good giggle about that. I already miss her.

Ruth was a long time friend of my mother Pat Schulz and a presence in my earliest memories. When I was four, she painstakingly made me my very own gingerbread house for Christmas. It took her three days. My mother took me to Ruth's house so they could give it to me. It was amazing... a perfect gingerbread cottage covered with gum drops. They told me later I looked at it with big round eyes, admired it for twenty second, and then shouted wheee! and knocked it to pieces. And Ruth never said a cross word about it. She was lovely and funny, and I will miss her.

I first met Ruth in 1968 when Ruth and Phil showed up at the Halifax Tourist Bureau in an old car (maybe a DKW) with all their earthly goods, and two kids, Gillian and Kevin, in the back seat and a bass on the roof! Here was our new bass player for the Halifax Symphony. Tom and I became close friends with Ruth and visited back and forth after she went back to her old job in the TSO (never mentioning the Toronto Six). Ruth worked hard to make this a better world. I valued her friendship and extend best wishes to her family, especially Kevin and Jamie, and Liam.

It's so weird and sad to talk about you in the past tense... I had an honor to know Ruth for more than 25 years. She was not only a fine musician but a great and strong personality. Ruth was a long time devoted member of the Shevchenko Musical Ensemble, playing Bass and, later, Mandola in our orchestra. Till the last year she was also a member of our Artistic Committee. Her wise and creative ideas and suggestions sparkled and highlighted our concert plans and programs.
Dear Ruth, thank you for everything you've done. May you rest in peace.
We will remember you in our hearts with great appreciation and love.

For more than fifteen years Ruth was a welcome member and the life of many of our family gatherings. Rich conversation and laughter were her special gifts. As a dear and loyal companion to our Aunt Myrna, Ruth would always make time for special family occasions and events.
We will remember her snowy, white hair shining like a beacon, playing in countless Schevchenko mandolin concerts. And her huge presence stays alive and is showcased in so many creative endeavours spearheaded by Ruth at Christie Gardens.
The heart and soul of this remarkable woman will live on forever.

Ruth had a profound love for all humanity. I feel deeply fortunate to have known her. It was an inspiration to see how, as one of the Symphony Six, she bore humiliating treatment for her political convictions with unbending courage. Free of bitterness or anger, full of empathy and compassion, she worked to improve the lives of all around her. An exceptional human being, indeed!

RUTH BUDD was a wonderful friend and excellent musician. I was lucky to know her for more than 45 years, during and after the time we were both members of the Toronto Symphony. She was always generous, and engaged me to play several concerts for the residents at Christie Gardens during the time she lived there and was in charge of bringing a wide variety of musical programs to the residents at that location. It is a loss for all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed.

My sincere condolences to her friends and family.

I had the great good fortune to play with Ruth in the TSO double bass section. Her humour, generosity and wisdom were always on display. When I first joined the orchestra there were many colourful musicians and Ruth fit right in to this larger-than-life group of characters. I felt like a kid in a candy shop - these people loved music. All these big personalities melded together when it came time to play.
Ruth was such a treasure. I'll miss her!

Ruth showed optimism and hope even when, as a member of The Symphony Six, she was fired for her political convictions. What might have been a humiliation became a banner of moral courage for her. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. I feel I am a better person for having known her.
