WILLIAM SMITH Obituary



WILLIAM PETER SMITH 1923-2004 Bor n in Lima, Pe r u to William Reginald Smith and Doris May Day. Peter was educated in Pe r u, Chile and England before obtaining his commission as Second Lieutenant in the 76(H) Highland Field Regiment Royal Artiller y in 1943. A D -Day veteran, Peter saw action in France, Holland, Ger many and Belgium, and continued his militar y career af ter the war with peacekeeping duties in Egypt and Palestine. He immigrated to Canada in 1953 af ter starting a family and 3 years working in Venezuela. In Canada, Peter was involved in and helped found several food brokerage businesses, including W. P. Smith Trading, Miller and Smith Foods, Suntaste Foods and Brastor Mercantile Ltd. While living in Toronto, he also became a Pilot Officer in the R CAF Intelligence Unit, and a life member of the Royal Canadian Militar y Institute. In later years, Peter greatly enjoyed travelling to Europe and Latin America, revisiting many countries, and hunting and fishing across Canada through the RCMI Outdoors Club. Peter leaves his wife Dorothy, his two sons Graham (Lena) and Brian (Brenda), their mother Ruth Smith, his sister Sheila Beale (Dave), his stepchildren Anna and John Robertson, his grandsons Michael and Stephen Smith. He also leaves cousins, nephews, nieces and many friends worldwide. Visitation will be held at the Ward Funeral Home, 2035 Weston Road. (north of Lawrence Avenue), Weston, on Wednesday, September 22, 2004 from 6 to 9 p.m. The funeral ser vice will be held in the Ward Chapel on Thursday, September 23, 2004 at 11 a.m. Condolences may be sent to Peter 's family at [email protected]. If desired, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Lung Association.
