Phyllis PLATNICK Obituary

PHYLLIS ESTHER SANDLER PLATNICK Passed away peacefully on August 28, 2018. Born on February 21, 1932 in Toronto to the late Michael and Clara Sandler, Phyllis was predeceased by the love of her life; David Platnick, Ph.D. Phyllis graduated from Harbord Collegiate; and later received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto. Phyllis began her career working in the circulation department in the main library at the University of Toronto. When David went to study at the University of Rochester, Phyllis went to work in the school's reference library until she was transferred to its archives. Phyllis loved the work there and remarked 'where else could one get paid to read other people's mail?' David's studies then lead him and Phyllis to Syracuse University. While there, Phyllis received her Master's degree in Library Sciences and was asked to design an on-line computer program to organize collections. After finishing her course work in Syracuse, the Platnick Family returned to Canada. On her return, Phyllis worked in the Serials Department at McMaster University in Burlington and then the College Biblio-Centre at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. Eventually, Phyllis went to work as a reference librarian at the Frost Library at York University; later becoming its head librarian. She also published two books: Canadian Poetry- Index to Criticisms (1970-1979) and (1980- 1989). These works and others she completed can be found at the Ontario Jewish Archives: www.ontariojewisharchives.org Despite her accomplishments, Phyllis never gave up her dream of becoming an archivist. She received her Master of Arts in History from York University, completed coursework at the National Archives and became a Certified Archivist. Phyllis then became an Archivist at York University. Once she retired, Phyllis loved to travel the world, go to the theater, and worship at Temple Har Zion (where she was a founding member).Phyllis also loved to spend time at her cottage in Muskoka where she surrounded herself with friends and family. She is survived by her three children: Deborah and Norman Waas; Dr. Howard and Sonia Platnick; Brian Platnick; and her 10 grandchildren: Jessica Levi, David Levi, Vanessa Jay, Daniel Platnick, Joshua Platnick, Zachary Platnick, Sofia Platnick, Jonathan Waas, Michael Waas, and Benjamin Waas.
