I am saddened to learn of the passing of my mentor and friend, Dennis Magill. Dennis was always a supportive and friendly colleague who went out of his way to stand up for what he believed. He had rare gifts of communication and leadership, and a warm heart for those less fortunate.

Dennis was nothing short of wonderful, progressive educator and great human being. I could never have been inspired to attend law school without his mentorship. Few educators make a real difference over one's lifetime, and Dennis stands out for me in a crowd of many. He was a huge asset to U of T, and he shall be missed.

To Elvira and family, i read the beautiful story of the life of Dennis today in the Globe and Mail. My Mom, Virginia Conley was one of your Mom's best friends, when we were growing up on Wandsworth Place in Kitchener. Denny was an attribute to the University Of Toronto and the community and your parents would have been very proud. Please accept condolences from our family for the loss of your brother. Dennis was an inspiring mentor and kind, humble person. He gave me my first research assistant position in sociology, co-presented with me at my first academic conference, and encouraged me to pursue a career in sociology. He always stressed the importance of getting out of the "ivory tower," engaging with community, and doing practical and policy-relevant research that would be meaningful to people. He will be greatly missed.

I had professor Magill for Intro to Sociology back in 1984 and still remember his classes. His lectures always came with a sense of humour that kept everyone interested. I learned a great deal from him and went on to major in sociology. RIP Professor. My condolences to his family.

Initiated the formation of UJNA, and helped guide the negotiations for the redevelopment of the previous sites of the Wellesley and Princess Margaret Hospitals, thereby ensuring a viable residential environment. Thank you, Dennis.
