Michael WILSON Obituary

THE HONORABLE MICHAEL HOLCOMBE WILSON P.C., C.C. November 4, 1937 - February 10, 2019 It is with great sadness that the family of Michael Wilson announce his passing peacefully at home after a battle with cancer. Michael is survived by Margie, his devoted wife of 54 years, sisters Wendy Lawson and Tricia Younger, son Geoff (Joanne Poulin), daughter Lara O'Brien (Sean) and grandchildren, Patrick and Thomas Wilson, Ciara, Kalin and Eamon O'Brien. He was predeceased by his son Cameron. Michael inspired so many of us across a great spectrum of initiatives. In business, he was determined to help his clients grow to achieve potential beyond their vision, and lend a perspective of experience and support to evolving technologies. In public life, he was devoted to tackling issues that were plaguing our country, and he was committed to finding solutions that set us on a path to success, particularly in trade. Whether as Finance Minister or Ambassador to the US, he had a full agenda. Educating the future generations of great Canadians was another important effort. As Chancellor of Trinity first, and then University of Toronto he inspired a great many graduating students as he gave them their diplomas and reminded them of their potential to achieve and suggested they might 'give back' to their communities. Perhaps his greatest impact has come in the advocation for mental health. Underfunded and misunderstood, it was a difficult to talk openly about a disease that affects so many people. For Michael Wilson, it was a challenge that was not insurmountable, as many felt. Much has been done to shed light on this issue and to create positive energy to find better treatments. Remarkably, he ensured that had a great deal of time to spend with family and friends. If he was able to work in a golf game, fishing or skiing trip, it was a fine way to relax. He had a gift to be able to mentor so many that he has touched in his years. Michael was deeply honoured to be appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada, which recognizes those that 'have all enriched the lives of others and made a difference to this country.' Desiderantes Meliorem Patriam ('They desire a better country'). A visitation will be held at the Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Avenue West, on Thursday, February 14th, from 4 - 6 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Paul's Bloor Street, 227 Bloor Street East on Saturday, February 16th, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception. Memorial donations may be made to CAMH, PMCF or Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care.

Saddened and sorry to hear of Michael's passing. He was one of the most honourable and greatest persons to come into my life. We shared so much for so many wonderful years working for him and travelling the globe. His work was endless and will never be forgotten. My condolences to you Margie and family.

During the endless hours working for our country, on occasion, he found time to have the odd game of golf!!

Rest in peace Mr. Wilson and may light perpetual shine upon you. A man with a passion for public service having served as an MP, Finance Minister for Canada in the 1980's and Canadian Ambassador to the United States. As a young PC Party member I was always very inspired by Mr. Wilson. He carried himself with dignity and nobody doubted his integrity. My deepest sympathies to his loved ones and friends.

Sad to learn that we have lost a piece of Canada's history. Michael was a great leader and custodian of our country's finances.
But he was also just an ordinary guy at heart. Being a good PC'er, I was asked on several occasions to pick visiting members of the Mulroney government up at the airport, this being pre 911. I picked Mike up several times, usually going through a gate in my car to pick him up on the tarmac. The first time, I opened the back door, passenger side and he said "do you mind if I just sit in the front so we can chat?"! Wow. Another time, he asked me "if there was one thing I would change in the tax act - what would it be"?.
I said, "make the car expense deduction, plus sales tax. Every province is different and it is unfair. He made a note. I never thought about it again until the next budget did exactly that. What a guy! He will be well and long remembered.

My deepest condolences to Margie and the family.
Michael was an extraordinary man of all seasons; one of the truly 'good guys'.
His contributions and accomplishments place him in the top rank of great Canadians.
I, like so many others, remember acts of concern and compassion when we think of 'Mikey'.
My own favorite was his immediate rush to my side after I broke a leg playing football, and his genuine laughter when I asked him if he had a smoke.
Trite but true, Michael was wired to be the best at anything he tried. And he succeeded on all fronts. A terrible loss; for all of us but particularly for his family and close friends.
May they be favored with some relief from their sorrow by the fact that Michael and his goodness will surround us forever.

Dear Margie, Geoff, and Wilson family:

Please receive my condolences. Though we spoke not recently, I remember Michael fondly the years during the NAFTA negotiations, and at the times that we did spend in Muskoka or Toronto.

I believe that Michael was one of the best statesmen ever produced in Canada, his impact was immense as were his contributions in business and as a mentor. Michael took the time to write a letter of reference for me for the Harvard Business School.

I remember with fondness, the story of the encounter with Mick Jagger, and the Rolling Stones, a classic!

My prayers and thoughts are extended to you from Dubai, where I am currently.

Sincerely.
