Derek HOLMAN Obituary

DEREK HOLMAN D.Mus. (London), FRAM, FRCO, FRSCM, FRCCO Derek Holman, organist, composer, choir master, professor and animal lover, died in Ottawa on May 20, 2019. Beloved husband of Margaret Holman; father of Susan, Nicholas and Judith (Peter); grandfather to Derek, Michael and Riley; dear brother of Pearl (John); uncle to Karen (Giorgos) and Steve (Dee); and great-uncle to PJ. Dr. Holman, as he was known by his choristers and students, was born in Cornwall, England on May 16, 1931. He held posts as an organist and choir-director in Anglican churches in England and Canada and was a professor for almost thirty years in the Faculty of Music's Department of Theory and Composition at the University of Toronto. From 1975-85 he conducted the Canadian Children's Opera Chorus. Dr. Holman was an established composer, creating many choral works, including hymn arrangements, a children's opera, song cycles and oratorios. He received commissions from numerous artists and organizations, such as the CBC, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, the Toronto Children's Chorus, the Aldeburgh Connection and many others. He was an inspiring mentor to countless young people in his church choirs, at the university and in the Canadian Children's Opera Chorus. He was awarded the Order of Canada for his services to music and received an honourary degree of Doctor of Sacred Letters from Trinity College in the University of Toronto. A memorial service will be held in Toronto this fall to honour his musical legacy. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory to the Toronto Humane Society would be welcome. www.fco-cfo.coop

Dr. Holman led me to a love of music, and especially of singing, that I will carry with me forever! He was supportive, kind and gave me confidence as a singer. My heartfelt condolences to his family during their time of grief.

Dr. Holman's musicianship, character and wit fostered a wonderful environment at the CCOC. Many years later, he had us 'rolling in the aisles' of his classes at the Faculty of Music, U of T. Deepest condolences to your family.
RIP Great man. Your music and memories live on.

Derek brought the St Simon's Choir to sing at the Monarchist League of Canada's 15th Anniversary Dinner at the Royal York Hotel, Toronto, in 1985. Our Guest of Honour was Countess Mountbatten of Burma, The Choir led the singing of the Royal and National Anthems, and gave a brief recital, which was memorable in two respects. First, Derek had arranged a rousing version of the Regimental song of the Princess Patricia's Light Infantry (of which Lady Mountbatten was Colonel-in-Chief, The Rick-a-dam Doo, which brought down the house and pleased Lady Mountbatten immensely. The recital concluded with "I Vow to Thee, My Country" as a memorial to Earl Mountbatten, her father, who had been assassinated by the IRA, which rendition brought tears to our guest's eyes. The Dinner ran late, and a flash of a good choirmaster's angst was my portion as Derek worried about getting the young choristers safely home. I also had the privilege of singing with Nick at St Matthias', Westmount, so catching a glimpse of the music talents he obviously had inherited from his father. Sympathies to you, Nick, and your family: what a great person was your father!
