Dear Tom, Mary and Barbara, We were very sorry to read of your fathers death . He was a delightful man with so many interests and such a zest for life, and held such a distinguished and respected position in the Foreign Service. We were very glad that we were able to visit your parents last February when we were in Toronto. We send you our deepest sympathy at this sad time.

I knew Michael Shenstone many years ago when I was a junior Foreign Service Officer serving at the Canadian UN Mission in Geneva in the mid-1970s. Michael was a highly-respected diplomat and was in Geneva (with his family) as Canada's ambassador to the European Security Conference.
He was a sterling representative of his country, a serious and scholarly diplomatist and in every way a fine gentleman. Many years later, I was pleased to have worked with his daughter Mary here in Toronto.
I send condolences to the entire family.

As a junior officer managing Canada's nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation policy white paper, he was a calm voice and inspiration about how to be a good diplomat. An inspiration and lovely human being.

Michael was one of my first bosses in External Affairs and I benefitted immensely from his wise advice and counsel. He was never afraid to tell truth to power. When he told Foreign Minister Allan MacEachen what he thought of the idea of what became the Trudeau Peace Initiative, MacEachen told him "you are an apostle of defeat"! (He didn't say he was wrong!!) Our paths crossed many times in subsequent years in Ottawa and Vienna. In retirement Michael and Susan were active members of RHOMA, including two trips to Victoria. To Susan and the rest of the family we offer our most heartfelt condolences.

He was one of the first diplomats I worked with at Foreign Affairs. We worked again together for many years as members of the foreign policy NGO the Group of 78. A wonderful, brilliant, generous, humble man, he personified diplomacy based on constructive engagement. It was a privilege and honour to have known and worked with him.

I considered Michael a friend and mentor. His passionate sympathy for the unfairly treated Palestinian people shone a light into a world that preferred to forget them.
His advice and counsel will be missed.

when i had the chance to stay with you and your family in ottawa in 1991...
it was you, michael, who saved my blueberry cake, which didnt come out the way it should - for some reasons, i had troubles with your refrigerator and the oven. YOU told our guests(i guess, the mackenzies), that this actually WAS a typical austrian dessert... and everyone loved it. thanks a lot, michael, what a great diplomate you were.
thanks for having had the chance to know you!!
love, etti

To Susan, Thomas and the whole family. Jane and I were most upset to read about the death of Michael. We were really moved by the obituary which summarized so well what a remarkable man he was. He had a truly ''well-lived life''. It brought back many fond Ottawa memories about our two families' long friendship. Please convey our deep sorrow to the whole family.
