John ROBERTSON Obituary

JOHN NORMAN FRANK ROBERTSON John passed away at Joseph Brant Hospital on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at the age of 90. Beloved husband of Suzanne for 66 years. Loving father of Elizabeth (Edward Andrew), Jane Robertson, and Anne (Duncan Sutherland). Proud grandfather of Clifford, Byron and Gareth Andrew and Arlen and Alexander Sutherland. Predeceased by his parents Norman McGregor Robertson and Rhoda Helen Morris. John followed in the footsteps of his father representing Canada in Yachting at the Olympics in 1948 and 1952. After competitive sailing he enjoyed cruising in the Nonsuch, Such 'N' Such with family and friends and being on the water in Hamilton Bay and Lake Ontario in the various power boats and sailboats he built in the basement. John had a great passion for building boats. We have many happy family memories of skiing, cottaging, travelling, and being at home by the fireplace. John is deeply missed by his family and friends. Visitation at Smith's Funeral Home, 485 Brant Street, (one block north of City Hall), Burlington (905-632-3333), on Thursday, February 27, 2020 from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. A Private Service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John to the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program or the Bruce Trail Conservancy would be sincerely appreciated by the family.

John had an enduring influence on our family over the span of 70 years. Together with Arch Howie my father participated in the ` 52 Olympic Games. Add in some very active years in the mid 50`s sailing the Lightning `Rhoda` and you celebrate what my dad said were some of his best years.

With the arrival of family, priorites shifted but the passion for the water was a constant. My dad asked John to take me for my very first sailing race in late 1959. I was nervous, anxious;and tentative. This was a whole new ball game with unknown expectations. I survived several outings . In the process John encouraged me to embrace the sport. He demonstrated that there was lots to learn ( eg how to read wind shift patterns through shadows on the water ) but that there is nothing as much fun as messing around in boats. With some luck I was fortunate to go to 1972 Olympics with Larry Scott.

I learned 3 key lessons from John

1. Express your love. His deep and enduring love for Sue was his compass

2.Bring your passions to life.John immersed himself in all his pursuits. This brought satisfaction and joy to many

3. Strive for excellence . He was a 2 time Olympian. He brought talent and dedication to the task . He placed a high premium on team work. When not on the water he enjoyed extraordinary success in busines
