To the Family of John Dossetor:
On behalf of the Canadian Bioethics Society, I wish to express our sincere condolences on John's passing. John's contributions to the bioethics landscape in Canada are innumerable and enduring. His firsts in bioethics are manyfounding Director and inaugural President of the Canadian Bioethics Society, first Professor of Bioethics at the University of Alberta, and first Director of Division of Bioethics and Bioethics Centre at the University of Alberta.
His legacy includes numerous articles and a number of books related to healthcare ethics that will continue to guide and inform current and future ethicists working in the healthcare field.
On a personal note, I had the privilege of getting to know John when I was studying at the University of Alberta in the 1990's and worked with John and Dr. Vangie Bergum on several projects. He graciously wrote the foreword for a book that the University of Alberta Press published describing the results of my doctoral dissertation.
John's practical wisdom, humility, and sense of humour are characteristics to which I aspire. I have only fond memories of my time with John and others at the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre at the University of Alberta.
Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Dianne Godkin, President, Canadian Bioethics Society
