Anne VAN EGMOND Obituary

ANNE (born Antje) VAN EGMOND January 25, 1925 - April 27, 2020 Anne, who was born in Holland, died peacefully at age 95, at the Toronto General Hospital, with friends at her side. Anne immigrated to Canada in 1955, where she continued her nursing career until she retired. She lived such a beautiful and full life. She was an artist, musician, gardener, lover of nature, a world traveller and volunteer. She contributed to many charities and enhanced so many lives; all with generosity and good humour. Her day wasn't complete without an afternoon cup of tea and biscuit and an engaging conversation, a good book or playing a mean game of scrabble. Ever practical and straightforward, even in the days before her death, she indicated she was ready before anyone else was. We thought, due to her hardy Dutch constitution, she would be with us forever, but that wasn't to be. She will be terribly missed by friends and family, both in Canada and in Holland. Anne's ashes will be scattered at Mount Pleasant Cemetery at a later date and she had asked that any donations be made to the Toronto Humane Society. There are people who are the fabric of your life and give life meaning; for us, Anne was this person.

It's only today that I learned about Anne's death, searching her name online. This Christmas I didn't receive her usual letter or email message with a short update on her life and best wishes for the holiday season. That's why I checked and came across her obituary. In 1987-1988 I spent a year as a master's student at UofT. Both at the start and at the end of my stay I stayed with Anne, who, characteristically, offered me free lodgings and meals, for two months, both at the start and at the end (in between I lived as a junior fellow at Massey College). She showed me around the city, took me to concerts and theatre performancess, and introduced me to her friends. When my parents visited me for three weeks in May 1988, they could stay at her house while she was away on one of her many trips. After I returned to the Netherlands we stayed in touch. She visited me a couple of times when she was in the Netherlands and I visited her a couple of times when I was in Canada. The last time we met was in 2012. She had just moved to Christi Gardens. I have the fondest memories of her, of her hospitality, of her interest in people and in music, of her environmental concerns, of her stories about her many trips and travels, and of her "Dutchness". She was a great person who had a wonderful life. I'm very, very grateful to have known her.

Anne touched the loves of many in her last years at Christie Gardens. She shared her many talents in the Chorale, french club, scrabble group, knowledge in music and many other fields. Growing up in Holland during the 2nd world war, shaped her character, and thus with frugality she lived her life fully. I will miss her smile, and wise counsel. A life well lived and loved . Rest in peace, Anne
