Jane STEVENSON Obituary

JANE HINTON STEVENSON 1936 - 2020 We are deeply saddened to report the peaceful passing of Jane Hinton Stevenson at home on May 6, 2020. It is a heartfelt loss to her husband of 56 years, Dave; her sons, John (Viktoriya), Dave (Rehgina) and Blair (Johanna); and her grandchildren, Owen, Sampo, David, Nolan and Griffin. Born on June 23, 1936 in Victoria, BC, she is the daughter of Richard F. Hinton and Merrie Girdwood and the sister of Judy Hinton Andrew and Roseanne Wheler (d. 2011). Jane was a passionate artist, never without a sketchbook or camera. She studied at St. Martin's School of Art in London, England and at OCA. There are hundreds of people in many countries who take pleasure in her sketches, drawings, portraits and photographs. Special thanks to Gisella and John at the Mira Godard Gallery in Toronto for their care, encouragement and support of Jane and her art over many years. Special thanks also to Dr. Virginia Griffin, Jane's family doctor for many years, and Emily McConnell and her team of PSW's, nurses, doctors and volunteers who cared so thoughtfully for Jane over the past many months. The exhibition of Jane's photographs at the Mira Godard Gallery that was scheduled to open May 2 has been postponed due to the pandemic. When the exhibition is rescheduled its opening day would be an appropriate occasion to celebrate Jane and her art.

My wife and I met Jane and Dave on a warm 1st October evening in Bordeaux in 2008. We were dining in a small bistro and we engaged in a conversation about travel.
Jane was in France working on a project to photograph bridges. Dave described his book,The Frosts of Winter, which I subsequently purchased, read and enjoyed, back home in the UK.
Elizabeth and I only spent about an hour in their company but have never forgotten that meeting with 2 delightful and friendly people.
I’ve only just by chance come across Jane’s obituary on the internet.
Our sincerest condolences Dave and your family.

Kind regards
Kevin and Elizabeth Wass

Jane was a warm and enthusiastic presence who everyone was always happy to see. Her ever present camera catching us all. She created timeless, iconic images which we will have to enjoy and celebrate her memory. She will be forever missed, remembered and cherished.

I came to know Jane through good friend and engineer Roger Dorton, all three of us brought together by our passion for bridges. When I first met Jane at her home in Toronto I knew I was in the presence of an indefatigable spirit. Jane's exuberanceand her love of bridges (so well expressed through her amazing photographs)shone through. As with so many things, Jane had jumped 100 percent into the deep end right from the start. Jane's health challenges over the years did not seem to diminish her spirit; she will continue to serve as an inspiration to live life to the fullest each and every day.

Jane was such a caring person and an amazing artist. She and Dave spent some time with my husband and me in Pennsylvania when she was photographing bridges in Pittsburgh. She encouraged me to sketch which opened up a new dimension in my life. What an amazing spirit!

Jane was simply an amazing person. An outstanding artist herself, she was ALWAYS there for everyone else. I can't remember an opening that I have had where Jane did not show up with a small bottle of bubbly to celebrate. Jane, we will miss you terribly.
