I just recently heard of David's passing and was shocked and saddened to learn of it. Although our conversations were infrequent, I greatly enjoyed speaking with him about two of his perhaps lesser known passions, the cottage and golf. He was a thoughtful and kind soul and very humble about his many accomplishments. My condolences and thoughts are with Elisa and their children.

David was one of the best boss I ever had in my career, very humble, gentle and kind person with a character which was both kind hearted and serious scientifically. You will be missed and heaven was waiting for you . Rest in peace.

I am very saddened to learn of David's passing just now. I remember well what a dedicated researcher and fun loving young chemist he was in the days when we worked at U of T in Dr. Carver's lab. Years later, when the company TRC was set up he generously took time to give my sister, (senior architect at Stantec) and me a tour of the facilities so she could incorporate ideas into design of a large project at the time. He will be greatly missed.
My deepest sympathies to his children, his brothers and especially his wife Elisa, as we met ages ago at a talk David was giving at MARS.

I am very saddened to hear of David's passing. My deepest condolences to Elisa, Larry, and Charles.
I met David through tennis and were frequent practice partners for over 20 years. We were teammates on the University of Toronto tennis team in 1975,while he was working on his PhD. Later in the mid-1990s we had a good run as a doubles team for a few years in the club tournaments at the Queen's Club and Toronto Lawn.
David was always easy going, and a humble person. He was dedicated to his profession as I would frequently see him reading chemistry journals between tennis matches. I am in awe of what he has done at Toronto Research Chemicals

Dearest Elisa, Julian, Sophia, Camille and extended family.
Our hearts and prayers go out to you at this difficult, and painful crossroad. David was a sensitive and talented soul, and his sweet disposition will be sorely missed.
We knew David and his brothers as we grew up in the hood and at the club. Good times were had by all, including my sisters, Carol and Christine.
And Christophe and I enjoyed numerous meals en tête à tête with David at Le Paradis back in the day when he was single. We witnessed:
the courting, le mariage, the birth of your children and fabulous soirées entre deux
May you find comfort and solace from your entourage.
May Davids spirit guide and protect from above.
Virtual hugs,
On vous embrasse tendrement
Francine, Christophe, Sébastien
Julien Pierre Chanel and our extended Vilim family.

I started out in Canada working at David's company when it was still very small. David was always warm, caring and respectful, whether the problem was with challenging chemistry in the lab or a personal matter. I remember David buying everyone ice cream from the truck or chocolates from kids going door to door during the recession of the early 90s. He would give me rides to the subway before we bought our first car. David's determination to work almost around the clock to solve a synthesis problem or develop a new technology was what inspired me to contribute to the company during those first difficult years, and eventually after 14 years at TRC to follow in his footsteps with my own synthesis lab. In more recent years, we would see each other at conferences and trade shows, and it was always a highlight to catch up with him, he was ever pleasant, cheerful and kind. David has had a great impact on my and my family's life in Canada and was indeed one of the most wonderful people I have known.
With my sincere condolences to Elisa and their children, and to his brothers Larry and Charles.

My wife Sarita and I send our heartfelt condolence to all of David's family. David was my lab mate in graduate school and we shared many of the joys and challenges of student life over several years. David was serious about his work, but fun loving, with not a few parties. He met Sarita, who would later be my wife during that time. When he came back from Europe, there were no jobs for chemists who wanted to discover new things; so he created a job for himself and many more scientists right here in Toronto. We kept in touch over the years, but not nearly often enough, and this sad news comes as a shock. May we all find comfort in the enormous contributions that he made to the world.

It is very sad to here of David's passing. My thoughts and deepest sympathy go to his family and friends. David and I became friends in the early 1980s when we were both struggling research fellows at the University of Toronto.
We worked together on several projects since then, co-published and kept in touch over the years. David's chemistry expertise was key, and his optimism and calm gentle manner were so reassuring in the face of difficulties along the way. We assembled a team of clinical cancer researchers to test the natural product swainsonine in cancer patients. David designed the chemical synthesis and his team at Toronto Research Chemials synthesized and supplied the compound for an all-Canadian clinical trial conducted in Toronto in the late 1980's. David's professional and personal contribution to many more projects has made a large impact on the research community.
David has touched the lives of many people and will be remembered affectionately.

I met David when I joined Lash miller at U of T in 1976, having come over from the UK. David became a great friend - we played squash together in between experiments in the lab. I returned to the UK and never met David again, despite becoming a Canadian and resident in Winnipeg, then Calgary in 1980. Toronto was a great experience for me and David's kindness and friendship made it better.
His death was brought to my attention by a friend in Kamloops, which has brought back all of great memories I had of David and the great city of Toronto.

Personally and on behalf of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto, I wish to offer our sincerest condolences to Elisa and the members of the Dime family. David made a major impact on the chemistry community in Toronto. As a member of Prof. Stewart McLeans group, he learned the art of organic synthesis as a doctoral student. After further honing these skills he went on to establish TRC, initially in the old Best Institute at UofT, I believe. TRC eventually grew into an important supplier of specialty chemicals, and a major employer of chemists in the GTA. David, through TRC, impacted both the chemical industry and facilitated the research endeavours of countless academic groups. I first met David when I joined the faculty at UofT and he was very welcoming. Over the years, we kept in contact professionally, discussing ideas such as the synthesis of some esoteric spider toxins. I last saw David in late February, which is when I learned of his illness. Despite this he seemed as cheerful and upbeat as ever, sharing his intention to being more involved with the Department of Chemistry and to sit in on some courses and attend seminars as one of the things he wished to do during his retirement. I am sorry that he never got the opportunity to do all of the things he had planned. David will be missed by many in the chemistry and business communities. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family members.
Sincerely, Rob Batey, Chair, Department of Chemistry, University of Toronto

We were all surprised and saddened by the news of David Dime's passing. Although our time with him was relatively brief, what moments we did share with David left us with an everlasting impression of his wonderful character. He was always genuinely kind, thoughtful, and caring with us no matter the situation. While his love for science held our admiration and our respect, he managed to win us over by also being effortlessly funny - a common trait among the Dime brothers. We will miss him, both as a boss and as a mentor, a human being, and a friend.
Our deepest condolences and our sincerest gratitude, love, and respect to David and the rest of your family.
Sincerely,

Hi
Very sad to hear of David's passing.
My very sincere condolences to his whole family and all his friends.
My family and his met over our children's early soccer endeavors years ago. I recall a splendid bathing afternoon for the kids at the Dime family pool.
Some years later, a men's evening at our house including David and seven others was a great success.
Last fall I bumped into David, walking Guy, near my place. It was shocking to hear of his health battle. But it was great to see him again, ever benign, ever warm, interested in the doings of old friends.
A couple of weeks ago on my bike we met on the street near the park. He said Julian was back living with family due to virus in New York. And David seemed the same.
It was a great privilege to know this man. An extraordinary person, unlike any other, in so many ways.
God bless him and his folk.
His good example will last for others, forever.
