In the summer of 1970, as a "Counselor-in-Training" at Camp White Pine, I threw aside my preference for creature comforts and opted to take a 10-day canoe trip in the Temagami-Temiscaming region. A major incentive was that the legendary tripper Bobby Cherniak was leading. It was not a cakewalk; but Bobby's strong and joyous presence set the tone for the journey. One indelible memory: hearing Bobby's bass-baritone voice singing "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" across the water as we struggled to paddle the canoes against a fierce headwind and whitecaps on Lake Temagami. Another one -- not so pleasant but equally important and equally memorable: getting a well-deserved chewing-out from Bobby for complaining too much. And yet another one -- seeing the Northern Lights for the first time and being grateful that I decided to follow Bobby on the trip. Thanks Bobby, you were a marvelous example, and I shall carry your memory as a blessing all my life.

One of the most inspiring, supportive, caring and intelligent teachers I have ever had the pleasure of studying with. He showed real concern, empathy and friendship. He will be sorely missed.

Sharon both Ash and myself were so sad to hear about Bob’s passing. We’d love to get in touch with you but I have an outdated phone number. We had so many fun times with both of you in Florida. He was a special person, always so caring about others. After all he was the one that brought us in to meet you and then suddenly we were eating/drinking together at your place. We hope to get caught up, we’re still at the same number. Kim & Ash xoxoxo

Learned today the sad news of Bobby’s passing. Remember him well and with great affection. Memories go back to Camp White Pine, and his loving sisters, Ellen and Donna. - Bob was a wonderful man, a fantastic tripper, and as his son, Aaron said so well and movingly at his funeral, his rules for great camping - especially leaving the campsite cleaner than you found it and with fresh wood for the next campers made a lifelong impression. Also his love of sunsets which I have carried on ever since.
He was thoughtful all his life. When we ran into him over the years, he was often wearing shorts, no matter the weather. Our conversations resumed seamlessly. He was always so friendly, interested, supportive and curious about our lives and engaged in every way.
We have been living for the past year in NY and had no idea he was ill. Warmest condolences to his loving wife, children, grandchildren, and his sisters - all the bereaved family. So very sorry for your loss. He was one of a kind, a unique and special guy, yes a real mensch.

Who was Bob? For our wedding anniversary in late August, with other things on his mind, he composed, sang and recorded a delightful message for a family movie. Never heard him sing before. Bob was everyone’s loyal, generous friend. We will sorely miss and always remember him. The Madoff family.

Bobby was a neighbour on Victoria Avenue in Windsor. I was a friend to his sister Donna. I want to express my sincerest condolences to Donna and her family. One fun memory was Bobby entertaining the neighbourhood by shovelling snow in his summer shorts. Always unique. Although I didn't know him well, he was always respectful, always friendly. He will be missed by many.

I have many fond memories of Bobby when, as Windsorites navigated our teen years. And when we had our JCC reunions many years later, he was still the same Chewy Cherniak that we all loved. My heartfelt condolences to his family. May his memory be blessing for all time. Cookie Rosenberg Noestheden
