I am schocked and saddened to learn of Seth Magosky's death. Last summer I was inquirying of the City of Joliet (via email) to learn if my greatgrandfather's house was still standing at 225 Hickory Street, after finding the address on the back of an old photo of the house. Within an hour, he emailed me.
It was so fun as we enlightened each other on what we knew about the Krakar descendants.
He has been on my mind lately and my daughter and I even spoke about his book yesterday, so I decided to check the internet today and see what any new endeavors might be. I am so sorry to hear of his death. It was a pleasure to know him, however briefly. You could easily feel his love of history and his ancestry.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Seth's passing. He was truly a kind and gentle person. It was my fortune to have known him the past ten years or so. Seth truly had a passion for life. I will miss his soft, kind voice.
I never had the honor of meeting his family, but my heartfelt sympathy goes to them. Seth was a truly remarkable person and I'm grateful that he came into my life.

I only met Seth briefly at Glessner House at Halloween, but he taught me a great deal. He had a very tactile sense of history that made it come alive from the inside.

"Some people come into our lives and quickly go.
Some people stay for awhile and move our souls to dance. They awaken us to a new understanding, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same."
This quote is so fitting for my friend, Seth. Since the 1st moment he called me years ago to sell his home on Eastern Ave.,(a huge, "Labor of Love", as all older homes are, he became a part of my heart, career & life. He was humble, hard working person who taugh me the value of, "Following your heart". This profoundly caring, intelligent and unself man lead me to higher intelligence for my existing love of historic homes. He bought me to a higher level of the depth and richness of Joliet's history. I, in turn wanted everyone I knew, to learn about the rich experience of his gift of knowledge. I found myself, "Marketing (if you will) Seth, as well as him home!! His profound manner of speaking to others to share his unimaginable wealth of detailed historic knowledge was an experience to behold. He was a radiant speaker who could, with his tall & distinctive presence in any size room, gently guide his audience, as they listened, back through time, as he spoke! Knowing and working with Seth,(as I then wanted him as my, "Historic Partner" in real estate, was the experience of a(my) lifetime, that will never be duplicated. I am honored to have shared a part of my career, life & family with him. I will always have the greatest respect and admiration for what he taught me. He was an asset to the City of Joliet, all the historic associations he was a part of (& there were many!) to all historians, homeowners & potential homeowners of historic homes.
But his generosity & love to help anyone with anything did not stop just with Historic efforts. He volunteered for many charitable causes. He opened his home every Christmas, (with all 15 trees, I believe) to all his friends. He loved Christmas! I have gained his zest for life, taking nothing for granted, now- -the past nor the future. "I will miss you more than words can ever express, Seth". Love, Melody (& Heather, too).

Some people, even if you only see them once or twice a year, always bring a smile to your face, even when you just think of them.
Seth Magosky was one of those people and I miss him terribly. All my sympathy goes out to his family and friends. He was such a special person.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Seth's passing. I greatly enjoyed talking with Seth each year at Halloween when we would lead "Haunted Tours" of Prairie Avenue in Chicago. His knowledge of the 19th century was most impressive, and his enthusiasm simply contagious. Joliet greatly benefitted from his desire to keep their history alive, and suffers a great loss that he was taken so soon, with so much left to be done. I'm glad that he was finally able to acquire his dream home, the Scutt mansion, but am saddened that he never realized his vision of restoring it to its high Victorian grandeur. His passing leaves a vacant chair at the hearth which never can be filled.

I went to Joliet Catholic with Seth. I did not know him very well in High School which I regret. I liked his TV show, it showed a passion he had for things of the past. Which to some extent is rekindled in all of us. To his Friends and Family, I am sorry for your loss, Seth will be in my prayers.

I went to High School with Seth, Although I did not know him really well, He was quiet, reserved, as I was. I do believe he was the most unique kids in school I always respected him for that. I have been watching him on televison stroll through those historical homes and I was always meaning to try to contact him to drop him line to say how much I enjoyed his talents. Now he is gone. I believe that every now and then God wants to open an oyster of humanity and hold a pearl close to his chest. Last week he chose Seth. To his Friends and Family, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Seth will be so very missed.....not only in Joliet, but on Chicago's Prairie Avenue where every Halloween for the last four years he was one of the docents who dressed in costume and talk of the cursed sites and untimely deaths of 100 years ago. I'll never forget him teaching one of the girls how to walk down Prairie Avenue so that her 1860's dress would move in just the correct way. He was also the person who told me that the house in joliet that I grew up in and that has been in my family for 80 years was a historic house built by a famous architect julian Barnes. He was amazing and a true historian who could totally engage a crowd! I am sure he is now visiting with Potter and Bertha Palmer, Marshall Field and Nannie and Delia, not to mention Marshall Field Jr and Albertine, John and Frances Glessner, Evalina kimball, etc, etc, etc.....he is home! He will be missed, but with us in spirit and always in thought!
