Obituary

LEROY -- Rex Raymond Houseman passed away Friday, Nov. 16, 2018, from pneumonia and other health issues. Rex was surrounded by his loving family. He was 80.

He was born in Reed City on Oct. 21, 1938, to Rennie and Lula Mae (Pratt) Houseman. He was the youngest of six children and grew up in the family grocery store in Reed City. Rex graduated from Reed City High School in 1956. On June 17, 1961, he was married to Alberta Loop, who survives him. Together, they raised a family of four children in LeRoy.

Rex first worked in Houseman's Grocery. He later moved to Grand Rapids, where he worked for a brief period of time before marrying Alberta. He then worked at Kel Reed, and on to Miller Industries/Tubelite, where he retired after 30 years.

In his retirement, he enjoyed winemaking and woodworking by creating anything a person could imagine for many people in the area. He was an avid motorcycle rider and took great joy in the miles he would ride every year. Because of his love of being a firefighter for over 20 years, he then went on to become the chairperson of the LeRoy-Rose Lake Fire Board. Rex considered the firemen his second family.

In the past, Rex was active in the White Pine Trail, where he volunteered his time to the maintenance of the trail. He and Alberta would enjoy riding their bikes from north to south and east to west as far as they could go on the trail.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years; children, Pam (Bill) Fedewa, Mike (Sheila) Houseman, Robert Houseman and Lori (Larry) Servello; 10 grandchildren, Alexandria, Katherine and Abigail Fedewa, Bryant (Crystal) Houseman, Brittani (Chris) McCrimmon, Ashley Blackburn, Anthony Servello, Courtney Houseman and Lynzee and Tailor Charles; 14 great grandchildren; two sisters, Lavada Bowman and Myrtle (Ray) Groendyk; many nieces and nephews; and his special dog, Dixie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Fritz Pratt, Keith Houseman and Wave Bailey.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Dec. 8, 2018, at the United Methodist Church of LeRoy, with Pastor Scott Loomis officiating. Burial will be in the LeRoy Township Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to LeRoy-Rose Lake Fire Department or the LeRoy United Methodist Church. Please share your fond memories and photos of Rex at oakgroveludington.com.
