Dominick Vavala
Formerly of Stamford
Dominick Vavala, 76, of South Salem, NY, formerly of Stamford, passed away at home peacefully on Tuesday, October 9, 2012, with his wife by his side. Dominick was born in Dasa, Italy to the late Antonio and Rose Bruni Vavala.
Dominick immigrated to Stamford, CT in 1953 where he worked as an Operating Engineering for Sam Grasso Co. of Darien, for which he was a backhoe operator. Dominick then went off on his own as a self-employed mason. He was a “jack of all trades” as well as an accomplished winemaker being known as “The Winemaker of Vista”. He was also known for his abundant fig crops. Dom was also an avid poker and Connecticut and New York Lottery player.
Dominick was survived by his loving wife Barbara Foster Vavala of South Salem, NY, his son Anthony Vavala of Thetford, VT, his step-daughter Heather Lea Foster of Bridgeport, CT, his step-son Sean Colin Foster of Stamford, CT; two granddaughters Jennifer Vavala of Florida and Amanda Foster of Stamford, CT. He is also survived by a brother Ralph Vavala of Easton, CT and a sister Stella Walkowski of Naugatuck, CT as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents Dominick is predeceased by his first wife Deanna Correa-Vavala, his daughter Lori Vavala Cogswell, his brother Benvenuto Vavala, as well as two sisters; Catherine Scaturchio and Teresa Capomolla.
Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford, CT from 4:00PM to 7:00PM on Friday October 12, 2012. A prayer service will be held at the funeral at 6:30PM. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made in Dominick's memory to his wife Barbara Vavala at P.O. Box 596, New Canaan, CT 06840.
