John Oliver Wilcox Obituary
John Oliver Wilcox

Brooktondale - John Oliver Wilcox, 80 of Brooktondale N.Y., completed his journey through life, on June 8, 2018. John was born May 6, 1938, in Ithaca, NY to the late Oliver G. and Helen L. (Stevens) Wilcox. John grew up in the Fall Creek area, graduating from Ithaca High School in 1957. He spent the majority of his career in the trades (Carpenter-Local 277), retiring from Cornell University after 22 years, as a carpenter foreperson. John had a stand out work ethic, setting the bar for all those around him. His true passion was his 88-acre farm in Brooktondale. While employed full time as a carpenter, John operated a small dairy farm, for a number of years; with the collaboration of his children and former wife Betsy (Kimple) DeGregorio. In retirement, John spent most of his time maintaining his farm, and enjoying the wildlife and peace and quiet at his retirement home in the woods. Often, he could be seen, in area gymnasiums, auditoriums, and athletic fields, attending his Grandchildren's events, as a mighty proud Grandpa.

John is survived by his seven children, John Wilcox Jr. (Tammy), Jennifer Lipka, Christopher Wilcox (Joanne), Robert Wilcox (Karen), Lisa Rose, William Wilcox (Karen), and Mark Wilcox (Carrie). John is also survived by 16 incredible grandchildren, Kristy Wood, Sally Wilcox, Bryan Lipka, Christopher Nash, Adam Wilcox, Ethan Wilcox, Kaitlin Wilcox, Al Wilcox, Cody Rose, Chad Rose, Justin Wilcox, Casey Wilcox, Joshua Wilcox, Brook Wilcox, Elaina Seymour, and Shawn Maxwell Wilcox. In addition, John was blessed with 14 great grandchildren. John is also survived by his partner and loving friend, Marie Balander, his sister Delores (Wilbur) Joyner, brothers, James Wilcox (Joanne), and David Wilcox, several, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

John treasured the friendships of fellow farmers, late Lyman Hurd, and late George Hollenbeck, of Willseyville, NY. John adored his Mother ("Ma") and Father ("Pa"), and often reflected on stories of them, his siblings, his grandparents, and special aunts (Pauline "Piney" Davis) and uncles (Clint Howard). John's final challenge in life was his battle with dementia. During that difficult time, John was embraced with compassionate caregivers, Debra Swantner, Natasha Ede and Alyssa Cote, and their families. John was known for his warm greetings, followed by a few firm back slaps. John was a simple man, loved God, family, friends, neighbors, country music, white T's, a hard days work, vanilla milkshakes, and the USA. John will be forever missed.

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial for John, that will be held at the Caroline Valley Federated Church, 542 Valley Rd, Brooktondale, NY on Friday June 15th at 5pm, officiated by Pastor Dan Phillips and Rev. Phil Jordan. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Brooktondale Fire Station, 786 Valley Rd, Brooktondale NY. Per John's request, his final resting place will be in Quick Cemetery, Brooktondale N.Y., with "Ma" and "Pa". In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dementia Society of America, or a .
