Leon A. Stannard

Ovid - Leon A. Stannard, age 73 of 7260 County Road 132, died at Strong Memorial Hospital on Sunday, January 3, 2021.

Leon was born in Ithaca on July 15, 1947, one of five sons to John L. and Martha (Rice) Stannard. After attending Interlaken High School, he joined the US Navy and served his country from 1966-1969. He worked in the motor pool at Willard Psychiatric Center, then Willard DTC and finally retired from Five Points Correctional Facility. After his retirement, he worked as a delivery driver for Growers Mineral Solutions of Ohio and Shephard Ford in Canandaigua, where he delivered buses and livery vehicles. Leon had been very active in the South Seneca Sports Boosters, life member of the South Seneca Sportmen's Club, VFW Post #6200 Auxiliary, Navy Seabee Veterans of America-Island X-19 of Syracuse, and the Interlaken Fire Department where he had also been fire chief.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Peggy; his brothers, Philip of Interlaken, Keith (Colleen) of Ovid, Dale (Nicole) of Lodi; his sister in law, Cindy of Ovid; his nephew and nieces, Scott of Cheektowaga and Kelsie and Darby of Lodi, and Peggy's extended family. Leon was preceded in death by his brother, Gary and a nephew, Kooper.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00pm on Thursday, January 7th at Covert Funeral Home in Ovid. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00am on Friday, January 8th at Lake View Cemetery in Interlaken. Kindly consider a donation in Leon's memory to the Interlaken Fire Department, PO Box 274, Interlaken, NY 14847. All Covid-19 protocols will be in place, masks, social distancing and occupancy limitations. Please attend only if you're willing to adhere to those guidelines as set forth by NYS.

I WILL REMBER HIM AS A FELLOW FIRE MAN AND HAD MANY GOOD VISITS AT HIS HOME PLAYING CARDS AND HAVING DINNER WITH MY FAMILY AND HIS WIFE. REST IN PEACE FELLOW VERERAN.
