Ciaschi, Joe

Joseph O. Ciaschi, Age 79, passed away at home Monday, November 28, 2011, after a long illness. Joe was born and raised in Ithaca, New York. Joe O. will be remembered as the grandfather of restoration in Ithaca. Joe's greatest work was transforming the Ithaca passenger train station into a restaurant with actual dining cars, where he ran the successful Station Restaurant for 25 years. Other notable buildings were The Boardman House, LeHigh Valley House, State Theatre, Maxi's Supper Club, Odd Fellows Home and the Clinton House, to name a few and for you old timers, The Villa. Joe also revitalized the Community Corners shopping area. Joe's most recent work was building the Island Health and Fitness Center on Inlet Island. Joe was awarded the Key to the City of Ithaca June 14, 1999. Joe will be remembered as a fierce competitor in every phase of life from business to sports. A three-sport star in high school, he lettered in wrestling, football, baseball and most recently, was inducted to the Ithaca High School Athletic Hall of Fame. In business, Joe did things when people said he couldn't. Joe was a member of Immaculate-Conception Church and loved his visits with Father Leo. He was also a member of the Sons of Italy and the Navy Reserve. Joe had a knack of helping people who needed a chance. He loved to dance, loved his lake house, football and took pride in doing masonry stone work. His greatest love was his family. Dad will most of all be remembered for his will to live and visions of things to come. Joe was predeceased by his parents, Orazio and Dagulia and wife, Sally, brother Florimondo and sisters, Bianca and Albina. Joe is survived by sons Joseph (Mary), Terry (Barbara), Tim (Robin), Tommy and daughters Lisa (Rip) and Tammy (John). He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Kristy, Adam, Kate, Heather, Joe T., Will, Sally, Anthony, Oscar, Cortney, Dominick, Sam and Orazio and 2 great grandchildren, Ryan and Vanessa. The family would like to give special thanks to all of Joe's aides, doctors, nurses, Bangs Ambulance, and Trumansburg Rescue Team in keeping Joe (Dad) with us for all these extra years. A special thanks goes to our sister Tammy for the countless trips everywhere and the hands-on care she gave to our father and also a special thanks to our brother Tommy for his faithful Sunday visits. Calling hours will be held at Bangs Funeral Home Thursday, December 1st from 4 to 7 p.m. a Funeral Mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Church on Friday, December 2nd at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations in Joe's memory to be made to the Immaculate Conception Church, 113 N. Geneva St., lthaca, NY, Hospicare, 171 E. King Rd., Ithaca, NY or to the George Dentes Youth Wrestling Program, C/O Frank Prudence, 15 Royal Rd., Ithaca, NY.

I worked at the Station Resturant as a bus girl with my friend Cathy Ballantyne. We loved dressing up in our jean skirts and bandannas.
Joe was the best boss he kept us on our toes, and always congratulated us at the end of the night for a job well done.
And he always gave me an ice cream if I stayed extra.I will always remember him.

I remember your Dad best from the old Villa Restaurant. A hard-working man with

To Lisa and the rest of the Ciaschi family: You have my deepest sympathy on the death of your dad. I know how important he was in your life and your care and support during these last few years must have brought him great comfort. Your relationship was quite special and while this makes the loss so very painful, I do believe that your closeness and warm memories will bring you comfort. I was very saddened to hear of Joe's passing, I have many great memories having worked for him for so long, he was so good to Bob, me and the girls. He will be greatly missed by all he touched. I can still picture him running around The Station with that unlit cigar in his mouth and coming up behind you to grab an ear. i will never forget the times he would do that to me while carrying a full tray of dinners (Cate and Sam til this day still can not stand to have there ears messed with)Joe taught me so much back in the day but i never realized it til later on in life. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. May God Bless you all during this time. RIP JOE <3

Oh, Joe. I worked at The Station with Joe and Barbara and Terry in the 1990s. What a trip Joe was! I remember one day the chef, Hal, was coring a tomato and Joe came in and was like, "Hal, you don't do it like that." [taking the tomato] "It's not dentistry." He was so funny. RIP Joe.
