Frances (Fairfield) Flannery Obituary
Flannery (Fairfield), Frances

Frances Flannery (Fairfield), 99, of Rochester, formerly of Ithaca, passed away on September 27, 2017.

Frances was born in Campbell, NY in 1918 to Frank and Esther Fairfield. She was the wife of the late Robert Flannery of Ithaca, NY.

Growing up as the daughter of car dealer during the Great Depression made her one tough cookie. She could change a tire in nothing flat. Fran put herself through Elmira Business Institute at a time when women didn't attend higher education. Frances Fairfield and Robert Flannery eloped in 1937. They were married for 58 interesting, funny, and adventurous years. She and Bob had a prosperous real estate enterprise in Ithaca for many years, Ivy Realty. Fran's sense of humor was present throughout her life. She never lost it, even as the days grew ever more difficult.

Fran loved all animals. She was gifted with horses, dogs, and all other creatures. When someone brought an orphaned, sick, or new animal home, they were welcomed and nursed back to health - whether wild or tame.

Frances and Bob raised 6 successful children. They found peace living in their home on the water's edge of Cayuga Lake. Her family was the love of her life. She always said that raising her kids were her best days. She was the glue for the entire family. Her best times were when all the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren came for family barbeques and whiffle ball. She was famous for waterskiing until she was almost 80 years old.

She is survived by her 6 children, Robert (Marlene) of Traverse City, Michigan; Michael (Barbara); Frank (Gail) of Ithaca, NY; Kitty Flannery of Haddam Neck, CT; Esther (Frank) Kerwin of Canandaigua, NY; and Amy (Matt) Petro, of Rexford, NY. She is also survived by 15 cherished grandchildren and 19 treasured great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Flannery, her brother Clair Fairfield, her parents Frank and Esther Fairfield, and daughter-in-law Jeannette (Bartholf) Flannery of Traverse City, MI.

Frances was supremely brave, strong, smart, kind, and tolerant. She never shied away from a challenge. She loved life, and was loved by all. Frances wanted her children to live their own lives and enjoy their families, just like she did.

Sincere thanks to caring staff of Brightonian, who made our mom comfortable and safe.

A service will be held at 2PM on Saturday, September 30 at Millers Interfaith Chapel, 3325 S. Winton Rd., Rochester, NY 14623. A private burial will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers please feel free to donate to in Frances' name.
