LAKELAND - Gwen Gallaher died February 14, 2018.
She spent her childhood in Lakeland and returned in 1997 with her husband Bob for retirement at Florida Presbyterian Homes. Gwen graduated from Florida State College for Women where she was voted one of its ten prettiest freshmen. She and Bob, a civil engineer, married in 1947 and lived in several Western states.
Lifelong Presbyterians, they were founding members of Cottonwood and Mount Olympus Presbyterian churches in Salt Lake City and members of First Presbyterian in Lakeland.
When Bob's job took the family to Lahore, Pakistan, for four years, Gwen actively served in volunteer positions, including pres-ident of the United Christian Hospital auxiliary.
Gwen and Bob, longtime residents of Evergreen, Colorado, owned Gallaher Engineering and Surveying. Gwen ran for the Colorado state legislature.
A lifelong Democrat and civil rights advocate for women and minorities, Gwen courageously spoke against the Vietnam and Iraq wars.
In Lakeland, she served as president of the local American Association of University Women and the FPH residents' association.
She is survived by her three children and three grandchildren. She lived remarkably and died peacefully, anticipating (as she frequently said) 'the next big adventure.'
A graveside service will be held in Minneapolis. Memorials may be sent to the FPH Loving Care Fund or the Southern Poverty Law Center.
