LAKELAND - Irene Sophia Anastos Laible Schmitt, age 92, of Lakeland, FL, formerly of Cape Coral, FL and Rye, NY, passed away on March 24, 2013.
Born on June 15, 1920 in New York City, the only child of Ernest Anastos and Gisela Laible, Irene graduated from Rye High School in 1938. She married Richard H. (Dick) Schmitt on March 11, 1944 in Coral Gables, FL. Returning to Rye in 1947, Irene and Dick were devoted to raising a family and sailing on Long Island Sound. In 1989, Irene and Dick moved to Cape Coral, FL and Irene became a docent at the Edison Ford Winter Estates in Ft Myers, FL. In 2006, Irene moved to Florida Presbyterian Homes in Lakeland, FL.
Irene is survived by daughters Melanie Weymer (Harry) and Vicki Hlinsky (Don); grandchildren, Dianne Hlinsky and Gerald Hlinsky (Yeo Jeong) and two new great grandchildren, Melanie and Richard Hlinsky.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard H. Schmitt.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 10, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Lakeland. A reception in the Welcome Center will follow. Interment will be in the Rye Presbyterian Church Columbarium in October 2013. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial gifts be made in Irene's memory to the Ford Edison Winter Estates, PO Box 2368, Ft. Myers, FL 33902, Attn: Chris Pendleton; or to Talbot House Ministries, 814 North Kentucky Ave., Lakeland, FL 33801.
