WINTER HAVEN - Marcus Daniel Dillashaw "Dan", age 87, died at Life Care Center in Winter Haven, Florida on Saturday, August 31, 2012, of natural causes.
Born October 9, 1925, in Cochran, Georgia, to Tommie Christian and William Emery Dillashaw, Dan attended Cochran High School, Middle Georgia College, The Military College of Georgia at Dahlonega, Emory University, and he was proud to have been an Eagle Scout. He served in the US Navy in the Pacific and had numerous reunions with his SS Hogan shipmates over the years. On January 1, 1947, he married Margery Lister, his "beautiful bride."
They moved to Miami and then to Winter Haven in 1951 where he worked in sales for the George L. Simonds company. He was in the restaurant business and worked as a real estate broker for the last years of his career.
Dan was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for over 50 years. He enjoyed traveling and shared his passion with his family. He took Margery to Costa Rica for their 50th wedding anniversary and took his grandson on an "odyssey" to his hometown in Georgia and to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed reading and keeping his friends and relatives well informed through newspaper clippings. During the last years of his life he became an avid bird watcher and was entertained by watching birds from his window at Life Care.
Dan will be remembered for his sense of humor, quick wit, and "elephant's memory". He never forgot a face, a name or the score of a ball game.
Survivors include his wife, Margery, his two children, Cathy (Tom), Gale (Skip), his three grandchildren: Andrew, Elaina, and Katie, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his eight brothers and sisters.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 5 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Winter Haven. Relatives and friends are welcome at the service and the reception at the church immediately following.
Thanks to the staff at Life Care for their help and support.
