VIRGINIA SMITH Obituary

VIRGINIA CLARK SMITH
EDINBURG - Virginia Clark Smith, age 91, resident of Edinburg for 78 years, joined her Lord on January 14, 2012, at her home surrounded by family.
Virginia was born on October 15, 1920, in Tuckerman, Ark. to Hubert A. Clark and WillieMurtha Clark. She moved with her family to Edinburg in 1934 and attended the Edinburg Schools. She represented the Edinburg Garden club in the 1938 Mission Citrus Fiesta and won first place wearing a dress made of corn husks. While in school she met the love of her life, David H. Smith. They married in 1941 just prior to David leaving for WW II as a Navy radio/gunner in a dive bomber off an aircraft carrier.
Virginia adhered to her Mother's advice of always help others. She did extended volunteer work and was a member of various clubs. She was a Presbyterian Youth Sponsor, Edinburg High School Sub-Deb Club Sponsor, Cub Scout Leader, Edinburg Presbyterian Church Choir and member of the Church Session. Virginia organized the Miss Edinburg Contest in 1952. she took Edinburg crippled children to Easter Seals Society for over three years. She was a member of the Hub Club-Child Study Club, a welfare child study program, Charter member of the Pan American Civic Players, and Board Secretary to South Texas Habilitation School.
She helped reorganize the Edinburg Hospital Auxiliary in 1969, was a member of the County Child Welfare Board, and manager of the Edinburg Auxiliary gift shop. She was also president of the Hospital Auxiliary, and Charter member and president of the Junior Service League. She and David were the first to be named Mr. & Mrs. Edinburg at the first Fiesta Hidalgo in 1968. Virginia was named Edinburg Chamber Woman of the year in 1973.
Virginia will always be remembered for her infectious smile, ready laugh and genuine concern for others. She lived and laughed until the end.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, David H. Smith in 2002, her parents Hubert and Murtha Clark and brothers, Billy Joe Clark and Arthur Paul Clark.
She is survived by her sons, Richard Smith and David T. "Skipper" Smith (Catherine) of Edinburg, grandsons, Elias (Leslie), Casey (Leena), Erroll and James Caleb (Shannon), Christopher and great grandsons, Ellison Woods and James Parker Smith.
A Celebration of Virginia's Life will be held at 6:00 pm, Saturday, January 28th at her home on 2018 Ann in Edinburg. Memorial Donations to the Easter Seal Society would be welcome in lieu of flowers.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Skinner Silva Funeral Home of Edinburg.

Your sweet Mother was so dear to me. She was always an inspiration!
