Dec. 22, 1922-Nov. 7, 2013

Owen Breidinger, age 90, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 7, 2013. He was born December 22, 1922 in Breckenridge, Michigan, the son of Bruce and Beatrice Breidinger and graduated from Alma High School in 1940. Owen married Helen (Gay) Breidinger (Ithaca), his loving wife of more than 69 years, on June 23, 1944. He served in the U.S. Army during W.W.II, then began studies at Alma College. Owen received an engineering degree from the University of Michigan in 1951 and specialized in metallurgy and magnetics. He worked for several companies including General Electric, Chrysler, Hudson Wire, and Extruded Metals. His two favorite projects had ties to outer space. His team developed instrumentation for the satellite that proved the existence of the Van Allen Belt (1950s) and, later, the propulsion system magnets that powered the first Lunar Rover. He is survived by his wife Helen Breidinger of Greenville, daughter Gay Breidinger of Kalamazoo, daughter Sandy Hunter of Shelton, Washington, brother Larry Breidinger of Alma, and sister Valda Mikek of Bradenton, FL. Also by Curt Hunter (son-in-law), Michele Massey (granddaughter), Joel Hunter (grandson) of Shelton, WA, and many nieces and nephews. Owen was preceded in death by his son Ronald Breidinger. A Private Family Memorial Service will be held. Arrangements are by the Marshall Funeral Home, Greenville, with complete obituary online at
