Virginia Frances Gervin Obituary
Gervin, Virginia Frances Virginia Frances Gervin ("Grandma"), beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and nurse passed away suddenly after enjoying her lunch on July 6th. She was 88. Grandma is survived by her daughters Ayla (Robert) Cummings, Judy "Bidgie" Willey, Amy Gray, her daughter-in-law Jill Gervin, her sister Elaine Ray, her beloved friend Boni Bard, her sister-in-law Jo Rink, her grandchildren Amy "Little Amy" (Nathan) Labenz, Cole Cummings, Duncan (Kristen) Gervin, Brigitte (Ross) Farro-McCartney, Alex (Lindsay) Willey, Samantha (Nate) Haken, Charley (Cara) Gray, Harrison Willey, Emily Willey, Kelly Gervin, and Apple Gray, her great grandchildren, Jack McCartney, Lily Gervin, and Isabella Willey, and the many other people whose lives she touched, most of whom called her Grandma whether they were related or not. Grandma had a spunky personality and was progressive before her time. She was born September 20, 1929 in Warren, Ohio and loved to tell stories of growing up in Ohio, Michigan, and West Virginia. Her eyes always lit up when she talked about the pediatrics patients she treated after graduating from Saint Alexis nursing school. She met her husband, Irfan Gervin, a doctor and immigrant from Turkey, while she was working as a nurse. They got married August 7, 1954 in Pontiac. They moved to Alma in 1959 and ran a medical practice in town where they served the community regardless of their patients' ability to pay. Grandma raised her children and grandchildren to have the same generosity. She taught them to care for and stand up for those in need and often had ideas about which things to protest or to support with donations. She recognized the humanity and value in everyone, and her generosity extended to all people, regardless of race, religious, or sexual orientation. Grandma loved to travel with her husband and children. She was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel around the US in a camper with Grandpa. They traveled the world together as well, but their favorite adventure was becoming grandparents. Grandma adored spending time with her grandkids. Even as she lost many of her memories, she never lost her love of family, music, and all things sweet. Grandma was preceded in death by her husband Irfan Gervin, her father Richard "Dick" Rink, her mother Clara Rink, her brother Richard "Dick" Rink Jr., her sisters Delores Johnson and Joan Rink, her daughter Mary Susan "Susie" Gervin, and her son Dennis "Denny" Gervin. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 11 am at the Lux-Mood-Wolfel Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 11, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the funeral home. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Alma. To view Virginia's obituary or to leave condolences for the family, please visit www.luxfuneralhomes.com.
