Harold Martin Obituary

Martin, Harold “Dub” Archie; age 86; of Stanton, formerly of Alma; passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2015, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was the son of Archie and Helen Martin, who preceded him in death, along with his brothers, Clarence, Edward, and Pete, and his only sister, Irene (Hatinger). Also preceding him in death were his sisters-in-law, Louise Martin and Fern Helman. Dub was a 1948 graduate of Alma High School, where he excelled in both football and track, holding many local and state records in both sports. He was later inducted into the Alma High School Hall of Fame, in its inaugural year, 2007. He went on to Alma College for three years, participating in both football and track, where he received the Michigan College Crown in 1952, by leading all state collegiate players in touchdowns scored. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he also played football. Dub spent 48 years of his life in Stanton, where he spent 15 years of that time publishing the weekly Reminder News. He retired in 1982, and he spent his time gardening, farming, golfing, bowling, hunting, and just enjoying life. Dub is survived by his daughters, Janet (Cosme) Moreno of Stanton, Dawn (John) Thompson of Rockford, Susan Simons of Rockford, and Vicky Martin of Avon Park, Fl; four grandchildren, Sara Lopez, Matt Ritter, Ben Thompson, and Adam Simons; several great grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Martin and Leona Martin. Following Dub’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Mid-Michigan or to Alma High School Athletic Hall of Fame Scholarship Program. The family would like to thank Hospice of Mid-Michigan and the Barden Funeral Home. Cards of condolence may be sent to PO Box 478, Stanton, MI 48888, or may be left online at www.bardenfuneralhome.com

I will miss my Uncle Dub with all my heart. He was always so kind to me. An important event that I remember from my early childhood, was going with my mother, Fern Helman, to the Alma Bus Station. Mom drove down there and we put Uncle Dub on a bus to the Korean War. I knew that I would miss him and it was a sad day in my childhood. Thanks be to God for giving me such a great uncle.
