John Broom Obituary

John Charles Broom (Also, fondly known to many as "JC"), age 96, died November 9, 2018 at his home of 37 years in Slidell, LA. He was preceded in death by his father, John William Broom, and his mother, Isabella Theresa Dubuisson Broom. Mr. Broom is survived by his wife Lina Elizabeth Sellars Broom, who he loved and adored during their 69 years of marriage. Mr. Broom would always say, even after his memory began to fade is "she's the prettiest girl I've ever seen". He and bride shared many great memories; they enjoyed traveling together after his retirement as a Petroleum Engineer in 1981, participating in the Slidell Women's Civic Club Balls and in their later years sitting on the couch having "happy hour" each night with family and friends. Mr. Broom was a loving father to five children, Dr. Elizabeth Broom (Mr. Charles Holton), Mrs. Charlotte Price (Mr. Roy Price), Mr. John W. Broom, deceased 2010 (Mrs. Cindy Higgins-Broom, deceased 2013), Ms. Lisa Warren and Ms. Michelle Broom. His children each share wonderful memories of him, whether it was learning how to drive, being supportive of decisions that they made, or teaching them lessons such as "always feed em' before they get grumpy." One of Mr. Broom's greatest blessings was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Grandchildren are as follows, Mr. Ben Price, Mr. Wesley Boudreaux, Mrs. Jennifer Nicholson, Mrs. Jessa Barthels, Ms. Leah Warren (deceased), Mr. Josh Price, Mr. Tony Holton, Mrs. Darce' Boudreaux-Byrd, Mr. Zachary Queyrouze, Mr. Dillon Warren, Miss Carson Broom and Miss Chloe Broom. Great-Grandchildren are as follows, Zoe Wooten, Britnie Byrd, Jonathan Warren, Chance Warren, Ryder Warren, Lennox Warren, Lina Byrd and Anne Boudreaux. He will be forever remembered for his hayrides, boat rides, lessons in poker and unconditional love. Mr. Broom attended Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary and graduated from Slidell High School in 1938. Mr. Broom attended the University of Tulsa where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Petroleum Engineering. Mr. Broom served four years in the U.S. Army Air Force during War World II, flying 33 combat missions over German occupied Europe as a Bombardier-Navigator in the 8th Air Force. Mr. Broom served again briefly when recalled as an Air Force Reserve Officer near the end of the Korean conflict. Military decorations include The Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart and Mr. Broom is a member of the Caterpillar Club. Mr. Broom is a contributor to the book "Gentlemen from Hell: Men of the 487th Bomb Group" and the National War World II Museum in New Orleans. Mr. Broom was proud to walk with his son Mr. John W. Broom on opening day of the National War World II Museum as surviving Veteran. Mr. Broom was selected as the U.S. Air Force Speaker at the War World II Battle of the Bulge and V.E. Day Historical Conference in 1995. Mr. Broom was initially employed with Getty Oil Company (now Exxon) as a Field Engineer and Advanced to Area Engineer, then District Engineer. Mr. Broom originated and published a new method of Petroleum production, Upstructure Oil, Recovery By Downstructure Injection into Exclusively Water Drive Oil Reservoirs. This process was subsequently widely used in the Oil Industry. Mr. Broom participated in many civic organizations while his children were young and as a retiree; Little League Baseball Coach, Webelo Leader for Cubs, Boy Scouts of America, Kiwanians, Slidell Little Theater, Ozone Camellia Club, Charter Member of the Guardians of Slidell History and Charter Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Slidell Post. Mr. Broom enjoyed many years assisting the Slidell Women's Civic Club in rebuilding and decorating floats, setting up for Mardi Gras balls each year, working the soundboard at the ball and hosting parties with his wife. In 1998 Mr. Broom served as King IL for the Slidell Women's Civic Club, one of the happiest nights he had in Slidell. A graveside service is planned for Thursday, December 27, 2018 at 11:00 am at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The service will be conducted by Pastor Michelle Perret Harris. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made in the name of John C. Broom to the The National World War II Museum in New Orleans. He was my tutor and because of him I was able to complete my college degree, he was the first person that made Algebra something I could understand, he was a teacher among teachers although that wasn't his profession. I remember him telling me about being shot down in WWII over Luxembourg, he was an officer and a gentlemen.

Psalm 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And if because of special mightiness they are 80 years.
May the memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.
