Bernard Marcus Obituary

Bernard Marcus, June 2, 2018, husband of 64 years to Frances Marcus, father of Kate, Aaron, Charles and Mary Marcus, and grandfather of Tracy, Jesse, Rachel, Gabriel, Emma, Eloise, Madeline, Isaac, Amos and Ezra. Preceded in death by his son, Aaron, his parents, Israel and Bertha Marcus and his sister, Hermoyne Sundheim. Bernard (Bernie to those who knew him) lived and practiced law in New Orleans since 1956. He was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA on March 10, 1924. He attended University of Pennsylvania and Carnegie Tech. Bernie enlisted in the army, served in the South Pacific during WW2 and was with the first forces to occupy Japan. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1948 and began a legal career concentrating on antitrust and labor law.  He worked as a lawyer for the US Congress and for the National Labor Relations Board. After moving to New Orleans he practiced at Deutsch,Kerrigan & Stiles where he started as an associate and rose to managing general partner.  In 2004 Bernie became of counsel at Lehman, Norman & Marcus and primarily served as a labor arbitrator and worked on cases all over the country. Active in the New Orleans community, he was president of the Jewish Community Center 1973-1975, held positions on the National Jewish Welfare Board 1974-1983, New Orleans Jewish Welfare Federation, Jewish Family and Children's Services, and Communal Hebrew School. He was vice president of the New Orleans Home for Jewish Aged 1978-1980, and part of the Florence Heller Research Foundation with the United States Army 1943-1946. He was a member of the American Bar Association, Federal Bar Association, Louisiana Bar Association, New Orleans Bar Association (executive committee 1971-1974), District of Columbia Bar Association and the National Academy of Arbitrators. A Memorial Service will be held at Touro Synagogue, 4328 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70115, on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at 10:00 am. Rabbi Todd Silverman officiating.
