My sincere condolences to the family of Rudy Lombard. He was a friend for fifty years, going back to the civil rights movement. We who were his colleagues at Howard University many years ago and all of his Washington, DC friends will miss him greatly. Rest in peace to a warrior who fought the good fight to end discrimination against black people in all walks of life.

To Ed Lombard and family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time. I remember Rudy so fondly and just helped mom upload some pictures. One of my best childhood memories was when Rudy took me and my brother and sister to see the Jackson Five. I will always remember Rudy's kindness to us. Love, Bridgette Roux Collins

Your brother was an inspiration to us all and a great and loyal friend. When we spoke last, he predicted that a time was coming soon for new Freedom Rides. Would that he were still here to counsel and lead.
Love to you and your family in your time of grief.

To Judge Lombard and family,
My prayers are with you during this time of loss. I came to know Dr. Lombard through my father(Leo Washington)who has always been fond of him. He often tells how Rudy was responsible for him joining CORE which later inspired him to become a Freeedom Rider. Thanks for a life that made a difference and that will inspire many for years to come.

My Dear Cousin Rudy Lombard is a cousin that I just really was able to meet with in the last few months. After spending his Birthday Celebration with him I truly feel saddened because we were not able to become closer & share more of our life together. Rudy was loved by many & will differently missed. I pray that the Lord will Bless my family as we all deal with this lost & that He strengths us as we try to move forward. R.I.P Cuz in Jesus Name. Stephanie Andrews Williams & Family

Rudy, we have lost so many family and friends lately that our hearts are heavy with grief. You help cut the path, and blazed the trail of civil rights in this country, and lived long enough to see the country's first black president. May you now rest in peace, knowing your job was well done.

New Orleans and the entire Civil Rights community lost a giant. I remember the first time I met Rudy. He had the kind of presence that let you know that he was "somebody!" Our work in the movement and in higher education was contemporaneous. We both enjoyed the food, music, and culture for which New Orleans is famous, but always appreciated the serious side of our city with its long history of protest for righteous causes beginning with the slaves and free black people who bequeathed to us the kind of quiet dignity with which Rudy lived, and at the end, died. We shall all miss him, but New Orleans is a better place for him having been a part of it.

I met Rudy as a freshman at XUP on 1957 and was immediately impressed with his leadership and concern for his fellow man. I am saddened by his loss especially on the heels of the loss of another XUPrepper and civil rights activist Llewellyn Soniat who also went home this month. They will both be missed by New Orleans and mankind!
