Michael Sklar Obituary

Michael Henry Sklar died peacefully in his home in New Orleans, Louisiana on May 28, 2016 after a brief battle with cancer, aged 70 years old. Born in New York City on June 14, 1945, he was raised by his parents, the late Solomon Isaac Sklar and Mary Schapiro Sklar, in Manhattan, where he picked up his first guitar at age five and began his lifelong love affair with music. He spent time listening to a young Bob Dylan perform at clubs in Greenwich Village in the early 1960s, and he taught famed musician Ritchie Havens to play Blues guitar while they jammed together in Washington Square Park . After graduating from the prestigious Dalton School in New York and attending Trinity School in New York and Tilton School in New Hampshire, he was inspired by reading "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac and hitchhiked to San Francisco in 1965, where he played guitar for numerous bands including Percy Sledge and blues legends Luther Tucker and Big Mama Thornton. In 1979 he became the guitarist for The Neville Brothers and fell in love with New Orleans and, in turn, a New Orleans girl. He moved to New Orleans permanently in 1983 and was with his late wife Roberta Gelpi Sklar for 29 years. Together they created a wonderful life, traveling yearly to their beloved Harbour Island, Bahamas, and taking day trips to Cajun Country just for the perfect boiled seafood. He played with countless musicians, including the Jay Monque'D Blues Band, guitar legend Wayne Bennett, Bahamian band Exuma, the New Orleans Blues Department, Willie Lockett and the Blues Krewe, and his own bands The King Bees and The Hipshakers. He was the bandleader for the late, great Coco Robicheaux and his Spiritland Band and was, with Coco, a founding member of the "Benchmen on Frenchmen" outside the Apple Barrel Bar, where they counted Lenny Kravitz and David Letterman as fans who dropped in to hear the Blues. He also appeared on stage with such greats as B.B. King, Irma Thomas, Dr. John, Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Tom Jones, Mighty Sam McLain and Ernie K'Doe. Bruce Springsteen sat in and played with Michael's band at the Maple Leaf Bar one memorable night in 1988, and Michael had the pictures and signed guitar to prove it. He played at all the major music festivals in town, including many years at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. He will be deeply missed by his daughter, Jennifer Sklar Vorkauf, son-in-law Sven Vorkauf, granddaughters Eden Vorkauf and Zoe Gruendler, sister Madeleine Sklar, niece Lila Sklar, nephew Isaac Harrison, great-niece Edrisina Sklar, and numerous beloved cousins and friends all over the country. Private celebrations of his life will be held in New Orleans and in San Francisco. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to the American Cancer Society and to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Michael was a dear friend. He was all about music, love, and enduring friendship. As I age, I find it comforting to say "good morning" to my loved ones who have taken up residence on The Other Side. I have a picture of Ro and Michael on my "Remembering" altar and they are greeted every morning still, because to quote Yogananda, "Love outlasts death and the ravages of time." Michael lives in my heart always. I'm grateful to have known him while he was on Earth. I know he is missed by his daughter and granddaughters and all who were privileged to call him friend.

Michael...you were always so gracious with your time, helping me learn better bass techniques. This was in the 70s. You came to Petaluma many times to turn me on to your favorites at the time. Bands like the Commadors...you would bring the records with you and your guitar. I will miss you and we'll see each other when we play the blues in the sky.

I just found out about Michael's passing today, 12/27/17. I'm so sad to learn this. I was a bandmate of Michael's during his Memphis era and we stayed in touch over the years. I learned so much from traveling and playing music with Michael...he was like a big brother in those days. He was one of the sweetest people I've ever known. He loved Berta and lit up like a star at night when he talked about Jennifer. The world should be half as giving and beautiful as Michael was. Peace & love old friend....trey

Michael was such a fine musician as well attested to in this guest book by so many fellow musicians. As great a musician as he was, he was an even better friend. His loving friendship was a part of my life for over 40 years. He and my deceased husband Burt were great friends, and Michael stayed loyal like a compassionate brother to me after Burt went to the Great Beyond in 2002. I know that Michael is laughing and playing and enjoying being a part of the Great Band in the Sky, as well as being with so many who greeted him there. I will miss his presence here on Earth. My love goes out to Jen, Sven, and Eden Rose who will miss him so much. May all of us who knew and loved him on Earth carry that love forever in our hearts. Play on, Michael!
Love,
Candee

I first met Michael on Harbour Island, in the surf . He asked me if I had met Charlie. I was a bit confused , but soon found out Charlie was a little fish that just seemed to hover near Michael. My husband and I came to see that Michael commanded the admiration of a lot of creatures great and small. I will always recall the quiet lullabys Mike sang us over the phone and to our daughter Alana. Always in our hearts.

Pops,
When I think of you, I hear your great laugh and I'm so happy to have that laugh to recall -- along with many childhood memories made in California. And then the bonus years with you and Ro --could not have written that script any better! Who would've thought that your great love would end up being a great friend to me. I'm proud to be able to call you one of my "dads." All my love to you, Jennifer--Big hugs. Courtney
