Gerald Berenson Obituary

Gerald Sanders Berenson, renowned cardiologist and academic, died at age 96, November 22, 2018, in his sleep in Houston. He entered Tulane at 16, never retired, and was still developing new directions for his celebrated research in heart disease and obesity. Born in Bogalusa, Louisiana September 22, 1922. Proceeded in death by his parents Eva Singerman and Meyer Berenson, and his two sisters, Sara Stone and Byrde Haspel. He earned his medical degree from Tulane University, elected to AOA society; completed residencies in the Navy just as World War II ended. Then returned to Tulane, working with Dr. George Burch. Following that, he completed a two-year National Institutes of Health fellowship in pediatrics at The University of Chicago. He was the second person to receive both the Spirit of Charity Award and the American Heart Association Population Research Prize, as well as many other awards. He was ahead of the curb, in realizing that obesity in adults began in early childhood, the importance of preventive cardiology, and the ill effects of obesity. He, and his much loved wife, Joan, returned to the city they both loved, where he began his 37 years at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He served as Section Chief of Cardiology, became a Boyd Professor, the highest academic honor in the LSU system, and taught over 4,000 medical students. While there, he visualized, conceived and developed the Bogalusa Heart Study that even today, after 46 years, shapes programs and broadens research. The family wants to thank Acy Hartfield for his continued support of the study. Gerald was proud of his active Navy service, and was an advocate for the WWII museum. Besides academics, Gerald had a passion for Windy Hills Farm, Jewish life, and of course, his beloved and loving family. He treasured being surrounded by his family and traveling with them. He was married for 67 years to Joan Seidenbach. Together they had four children. Leslie, Ann (Richard Goldfarb), Robert (Irene), Laurie (Dale Maas). They were blessed with nine grandchildren, Aaron Berenson, David Goldfarb (Ann Axelrad), Stephen Goldfarb (Megan Breitenwischer), Andrew Goldfarb, Michael Berenson, Carl Berenson, Julia Berenson, Rachael Maas, and Benjamin Maas. As well as three great-grandchildren Maxwell Goldfarb, William Goldfarb and Gus Goldfarb, and numerous Labradors, which he adored. Every week for his entire life, he drove 100 miles to visit another love, Windy Hills Farm, in Poplarville, Mississippi. It gave him such pleasure to see his cows and talk with local farmers. For the last few years, he could not have made the drive without the help from Dr. Jihua Xu. The family is extremely grateful for this dedicated friendship. In 1961, Gerald and Joan were members of the first mission to Israel sponsored by the National United Jewish Appeal Young Leadership. This strengthened Gerald's love for Israel and Judaism. He never missed the Sunday morning Shir Chasdash Men's Club service and breakfast. His love for children and their well being carried over into his Jewish life. He was honored by Jewish Children's Regional Service, National Council of Jewish Women Greater New Orleans Section, and the New Orleans Jewish Day School. Gerald was recognized by countless national and international organizations with many prestigious awards. Whether Jewish, medical, or agricultural, all represented equally important facets of his life. He was proud, but humble, always saying, his work ""was recognized because of the quality of the research and the caliber of those associated with it."" In lieu of flowers, Gerald hoped you would consider donations to Jewish Children's Regional Service, 3500 N. Causeway Blvd. Ste. 1120, Metairie 70002; New Orleans Jewish Day School, 3747 W. Esplanade Ave. Metairie 70002; Louisiana State Medical School (UMC) Department of Cardiology, 2000 Canal St. New Orleans, 70112; or the charity of your choice. Visitation for family and friends begins Sunday at 12 pm followed by funeral at 1 pm at Shir Chadash Congregation, 3737 W. Esplanade Ave. Metairie 70002. Burial is private. Those whose hearts you touched, continue to speak your name. Especially, on this the day of your birth, you are remembered for your wisdom that balanced a thirst for knowledge with responsibility for benefitting the marginalized. You are remembered for your sincere thoughtfulness and compassion for your family, friends, strangers in need, and above all, children. You are remembered for your respect for life changes aging brings amidst a desire to actively live. You are remembered for your insight into others' potential, strengthened by mentoring them to their fullness of person. You are remembered for your ability to move forward in the presence of tragedy. I remember you as a friend, mentor, and confidant who has made my life path walkable. I celebrate you with a flower from my garden, my cherished Siberian iris, Over Gloryland. Happy Birthday, Gerald!

Gerald, Fall is the season of your birth and of your death. In your honor, I have written the following poem.
Fall
written by Sandra Owen
October 25, 2023
Fall is a time to meditate on what was and what is
yet to be.
While sitting in my garden, a cool breeze brushes my cheek; a nearby dove coos from his hiding
place.
As if a kaleidoscope, the colors of our friendship, embedded in my heart, form unique and beautiful images of what was and what is yet to be.

My upward gaze encompasses the cloudless blue sky. Smiling, I reach out my hand to accept what is yet to be, knowing your spirit is my strength and our friendship is eternal!

My grief from your "passing" is lifting enough that I now understand I can honor you each time I reach out and lift-up others needing support and encouragement in ways that you demonstrated through many years of our friendship. I am attaching a yellow/orange calla lily, from my garden, representing its symbol of hope, confidence, respect, and nurturing presence of service, healing, and kindness, all attributes I observed in you.

September brought unexpected life challenges resulting in my belated birthday wish to you. You once told me to meet such challenges straightforward with confidence and courage and then find my place of peace for renewal. For you, that place was fly fishing with your son in a secluded mountain stream. For me, that place of peace is in my flower gardens among nature's beauty. On this October evening, I bring you a birthday flower," Harvest of Memories" iris, to celebrate your birth, your life, and our friendship. Happy 99th Birthday, Gerald!

Another Thanksgiving has come and gone. An empty chair remains at the table. I mourn that emptiness yet this passing of time has softened the rough edges of my grief. Time has illuminated the gift you have given us in your passing on Thanksgiving night, a celebrated time of the harvest and thankfulness for our blessings, a time not of sorrow but thankfulness. Now, with each future Thanksgiving, the chair will glow as it is filled with thankfulness for your friendship and your encouragement as I navigated my life journey.

Happy Birthday, Gerald
So much of me is made of what I learned from you,
You will always be a hand print on my heart,
And now, as our stories have different endings,
I know you have rewritten mine by being my special friend.
May the glory of heaven shine upon you and bless you for eternity!

Dr. Gerald Berenson had a profound influence on my career. As a faculty member at The University of New Orleans we collaborated with a dynamic committee of multidisciplinary professionals to develop The Heart Smart Program in the mid 1980s. He always respected and supported my work relative to the role physical activity impacted heart disease prevention. He was an outstanding medical professional, researcher and a pioneering health educator. The school-based intervention we developed was very important to him, many times he would say to me..."we have the research Steve, heart disease begin in childhood-- now we have to teach the teachers to help children lead a healthy lifestyle before they develop poor health habits later in life". He had great academic and personal insights because he cared so much.

Dear Dr. Berenson's Family,

As I said at Dr. Berenson's Shivah Minyan, I first met Dr. Berenson and Joan at Chevra Thilim Synagogue. Every Shabbat whenever I saw them after our first meeting, Dr. Berenson and Joan were always so warm and friendly toward me.

Then, coincidentally, I began seeing Dr. Berenson every morning when I walked through the LSU School of Medicine corridor on my way to work at Charity Hospital. He always gave me a big smile and a warm greeting.

When Chevra Thilim merged with Shir Chadash, I began seeing Dr. Berenson and Joan again on a regular basis. They always made me feel good whenever I saw them. I had an opportunity at Shir Chadash to introduce my husband, Reuben to Dr. Berenson and Joan, and he also liked them very much.

Reuben and I will remember Dr. Berenson and Joan with much fondness always. We are grateful for their friendship.

Sincerely,

Marlene Friedman

Dr. Berenson pioneered the study of cardiovascular disease risk factors in children and youth and their association with atherosclerosis. In addition, his school-based interventions were very innovative. Working with him at LSU 1985-1990 vastly influenced my career. He was a strong and dedicated leader. Few folks recognized or appreciated his dedication to his work.Imagine he is still creating superb research in the afterlife.

My prayer for the family is strength as you mourn and courage as you celebrate a life well lived. From infants and children to young adults and the elderly, we can all attest to the graciousness, concern, and commitment Dr.Berenson devoted to improving the quality of cardiovascular health and health education.I have learned so much from him and especially appreciate the empathy he shared when I had a spinal stroke.Just as one candle lights another and can light thousands of other candles, so has Dr. Berenson's life enriched the lives of so many he has touched.

Dr. Berenson was a gentleman of the first order in his dealings with his students. I remember him well at LSU Med School. He showed us that there was more to medicine than tests...there was the human side that was very important. He drove us to be better, which I learned to appreciate later.

Thanks for being such a good doctor and friend to us all. May you continue your running that you loved. It was an honor to know you!

Dr. Berenson was a gentleman of the first order in his dealings with everyone, including his students. I remember him well when I was a student at LSU. He drove us with a purpose...which I long ago learned to appreciate. There was more to diagnosis than mere tests. And he showed us the human side of medicine.

Thanks so much, good Doctor. May you continue to do your running that you loved. It was an honor to know you.
