Hyman Tolmas Obituary

Hyman "Doc" Cyril Tolmas, M.D., 93, passed away on November 11, 2015, Veterans Day, after a brief illness. He was born in New Orleans, LA to Charles Tolmas and Cecile Bressler Tolmas. Medicine was his passion in life. A pediatrician, he had a distinguished career in New Orleans where he practiced medicine for 55 years treating three generations of patients. He loved helping people, particularly children, and his patients' parents loved the unhurried, individual attention he gave to them. Doc received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Tulane University. In 1950, he married the love of his life, Connie Cohen Tolmas, in Dallas, TX. He was still practicing medicine when Hurricane Katrina hit and brought Doc and Connie to Dallas. Doc was one of the pioneers in the pediatric subspecialty of Adolescent Medicine. He lectured extensively on the subject for the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society for Adolescent Medicine. He lectured locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally, including in Israel and Australia. In New Orleans, he was one of the founders of the Greater New Orleans Pediatric Society. He also ran a 15-year community program for parents and teenagers called "Coping with Adolescence: The Challenging Years". He also headed a polio vaccination drive in New Orleans. He served on the boards of many hospitals in New Orleans, including as Chairman of the Board of Mercy Hospital. He was a clinical professor of pediatrics and taught for many years at both Tulane and LSU Medical Schools. Also, he served on the admissions committee of Tulane Medical School for years. Additionally, he was the class agent for the 1945 Medical Class. He received the first Lifetime Achievement Award from the Tulane Medical Alumni Association. He was active in the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society for Adolescent Medicine and served on numerous committees of both organizations. In 1985, he was honored to receive an award from the Section on Adolescent Health of the American Academy of Pediatrics for his community service to adolescents. He was also presented with the Spirit of Charity Award in 2004 by the Medical Center of Louisiana Foundation awarded to a physician who trained at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and who has made a significant contribution to medicine. He served as the interim President of Congregation Anshe Sfard in New Orleans for 27 years. After he moved to Dallas, he retired from the active practice of medicine, but many of his patients from New Orleans continued to call him for medical advice or just wishing to remember him and connect with him. As late as two weeks ago, over ten years after Katrina, an old patient called him just to visit with him over the phone. In Dallas, he continued his community service becoming involved in his synagogue, Congregation Tiferet Israel. There he re-created his program, "Coping with Adolescence: The Challenging Years". He also served on the Board of Directors of Tiferet Israel. In 2013, he and Connie were honored by the synagogue. Doc and Connie, along with their children and daughter-in-law, were also honored in New Orleans in 2014 by the Jewish Children's Regional Service. Doc and Connie were also honored this month by the Bnai Zion Foundation. Doc was also a proud member of the Jewish War Veterans Post 256 in Dallas, as well as the New Orleans post. He served in the United States Navy during and after World War II. His priorities were his family, his faith, his patients, his community, and the State of Israel. He was a kind, respectful, generous, deeply religious, and grateful man - a true gentleman and mensch. He will be profoundly missed. We are grateful to have had him with us for almost 94 years. Hyman was predeceased by his parents, sister Dorothy Horton, and brothers Gerson and Oscar and niece, Cheri Horton. He is survived by his loving wife, Connie, daughter Dr. Jeanie Tolmas, son and daughter-in-law Alan and Gina Tolmas and two granddaughters, Sheina Tolmas and Cara Tolmas. He is also survived by niece Rae Horton and nephew Dr. Joseph Horton along with many other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Funeral services were held in Dallas, Texas on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at Congregation Tiferet Israel, 10909 Hillcrest Rd. at 12:30pm followed by burial at Sparkman Hillcrest on Northwest Highway. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Tiferet Israel, Bnai Zion Foundation Jewish Childrens' Regional Service or Jewish War Veterans Post 256, or the charity of your choice.

Dr. Tolmas, was my doctor, since birth, in 1961! Saw him, in Metairie, LA, on Metairie Road. He saw me; later in life. I was an adult! He helped me, get rid of a serious infection, I had in my foot. "The hottest, soapiest water I could stand, got rid of it! He also once, broke a needle off, trying to give me a shot, in my buttocks! No fault of his own; it was all me!! I Love Him; still to this day!!

Dr. Tolmas was my doctor as a child. I am now 45 years old. My mother would say that when I was sick or even just mad at her that I would cry for Dr. Tolmas, that is how much I loved him. Both of my sons who are now 19 and 23 were his patients for many years and I wouldn't have had it any other way! There has never been another doctor like him for my boys since he stopped practicing in Louisiana. I trusted him 100% We all loved him, he will be missed!

It is because of this wonderful man that I'm alive today, when I was 4 years old, he diagnosed me with Ryes syndrome, while at a doctor visit and call an ambulance , with in minutes I slipped in to a coma, and my heart stopped, he brought me back. I made my 5 th birthday in the ICU at East Jefferson Hospital

My son Evan would not be alive today without Dr. Tolmas keen sense when something just did not seem right. Kept him over after I went home and at 5 days old would have died from peritonitis. Today, Evan at age 45 is a success as a son, father, filmmaker and businessman. Thank you Dr. Tolmas, you will always be remembered for the gift you gave us in your kindness, compassion and wisdom. Rest in Peace.

Doctor Tolmas was a wonderful Doctor and person. I can remember him coming to our home to check on one of my brothers on a Sunday morning. He was one of the most dedicated doctors I have ever known. He understood the "issues" of growing up and knew how to communicate with both his patient and their parents.
The last time I saw him was before Katrina at his office on Metairie Road. We talked for awhile and I was amazed how he remembered me and my brothers. He also told me how he was unable to remove the late Dr Craven's name off the door of the office because he was such a good friend .
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Tolmas family at this difficult time.
RIP Dr Tolmas.

My heart hurt yesterday after hearing this news. I was a second generation patient of Dr. Tolmas and if it wouldn't have been for Katrina as his move to Texas, he would have been my daughter's pediatrician as well. I would still call him from time to time to catch up, get parenting advice, etc and sometimes we would talk for hours. He was never in a rush to hang up and neither was I. He loved his patients as family and never rushed office visits either. I am blessed to have known him and I truly loved him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I knew Hyman and Connie both from a personal and business standpoint. Truly I have not met, in either capacity, people with more class and decency. Those are terms that are used very frequently and often do not apply. They clearly do here.

Dr. Tolmas was our family pediatrician and cared for not only me and my brother and sister but our children as well. He set the bar incredibly high and finding a doctor now with his dedication, care, and extensive expertise is difficult. He always took so much time with his patients and was truly interested in their lives. I can remember him asking me to show him my dance routine for an upcoming review and when I just did a few steps he told me to do the whole thing. He was there everyday as my newborn son was in the NICU and every time I called as a new parent even at 2:00am. He was truly one of a kind and his legacy and love towards his patients will live on forever. My condolences to his family and my gratitude to them for sharing him with us.

Dr. Tolmas cared for my brothers and sisters and me for many years. My Dad died when I was 5 and my baby sister was not yet born...Dr Tolmas was so supportive to my mom and all of us kids...he was always there for us. He knew my Mom was a widow with 6 small kids, troubled financially as well as emotionally...he promised her he would care for the kids free of charge ....and he told her "Just do not thank me..this is my Mitzvah..my obligation, it is not a favor"....This taught me so much. I will never forget Dr. Tolmas.

Dr. Tolmas was the GREATEST physician I have ever known. He is the standard upon which I base my choice of physicians even now at the age of 60. His compassion and thoroughness knew no bounds!! I can still hear him saying,"Eddie, if you move, that needle will break off in your arm!!" Needless to say, the arm went limp, and after the injection, I received the world's best-tasting sucker! What a great man!!! May he rest in God's peace!!! Love ya, Doc!!!
