Rodney DeWitt Cannon Obituary
Rodney DeWitt Cannon, Sr.

A celebration of the life of Rodney DeWitt Cannon, Sr. will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in West Monroe, LA with Pastors Pat Lofton, Rick McPhearson and Randy Burdeaux officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe, LA.

Mr. Cannon, 79, was born December 14, 1934, and passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014 after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, DeWitt Herschel and Lois E. Lee Cannon; an infant brother; and a son, Michael Lane Cannon.

He is survived by his wife, Sara Elizabeth Cloud Cannon; son, Chuck and wife Susan; daughter, Beth Cannon Featherston; daughter, Dianne Shivor Cannon Hayden and husband Stan; grandchildren, Mickey Cannon, Casey Hayden and wife Jennifer, Brent Moore and wife Hilary, Jenny Hayden and husband Chad, Joshua Cannon and wife Ashley, Justin Cannon, Jamie Cannon Gable and husband Eli, and Gabby Featherston; great-grandchildren, Bailey Moore, Leo Moore, Carrie Cannon, Harper Gable, Beckett Gable, Whitt Mitchell, Gwen and Helen Hayden; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.

Mr. Cannon was a native of Ouachita Parish and played tackle for the Ouachita Parish High School Lions in the early 1950's. He received a football scholarship and played one year at LSU and then later at Northeast. After working 25 years at the paper mill in West Monroe, Mr. Cannon operated his own business, Cannon Industrial Supply.

While sports were important to Mr. Cannon - he was a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox, LSU Tigers and New Orleans Saints - he also was involved in other activities for which he will be remembered. While raising his family, one would be most apt to find Rodney grooming animals for a 4-H show or teaching his family how to read music as they practiced to perform gospel songs as part of the Cannon Family Quartet. Rodney was also an integral part of starting the Delta Barrow Show, a local swine show that ran for several years in Ouachita Parish.

In later years, Mr. Cannon continued his interest in gospel music by singing alongside his son, Mike, with the Kinsmen and later with his oldest son, Chuck, with Glory Road. His interest in gospel music ran back to his own teenage years when he sang bass as a member of the Teenage Quartet each Sunday on KLIC Radio in Monroe.

Mr. Cannon enjoyed being involved in his children's and grandchildren's activities, and was a loving husband, devoted to his wife of 59 years. He will be greatly missed.

Pallbearers will be Mickey Cannon, Brent Moore, Joshua Cannon, Justin Cannon, Eli Gable, Dr. Bob Morrow, Tom Morrow and Dr. Rob Cloud.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Men's Sunday school class at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Robert Cannon, Doyle Saterfiel, Gary Davis and Tony Martin.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Family Life Center.
