Funeral Services for Billy Bruce Watson, 80, of West Monroe, LA will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 16, 2014 at First United Methodist Church of West Monroe with Rev. Shawn Hornsby and Rev. Jon Tellifero officiating. Interment will follow in Hasley Cemetery in West Monroe, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe.

Mr. Watson was born in Monroe, LA December 17, 1933 and passed away Saturday, June 14, 2014 at home in West Monroe, LA.

He attended First United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board; four years as chairman of the board; four years as lay leader; was a Sunday school teacher for many years and served regularly as an usher. He was a member of the Ed Stinson Sunday School Class.

He served four years on the West Monroe Board of Alderman. He was awarded West Monroe High Distinguished Teacher Award.

He retired from Ouachita Parish School System, where he was a coach, teacher and counselor for 22 years. He formed the first chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes at West Monroe High School. He served as principal and coach at Riverfield Academy in Rayville, LA. He was also the principal and defense coach at Prairie View Academy in Bastrop, LA, where they won the state football championship in 1988.

On March 25, 2010 by motion of Representative Frank Hoffmann the Louisiana House of Representatives congratulated and commended Coach Billy Watson "for many outstanding years of coaching and service to the youth of Ouachita Parish."

He attended Ouachita Parish High School. He graduated with a B. S. degree from the University of Louisiana at Monroe [NLU was the name at the time]; going on later to earn a M. ED. and Masters Plus 30 in Education also from ULM.

He organized and was instrumental in forming the O.P.H.S. Lions Alumni Reunion from 1982-1998.

He served in West Monroe Jaycees for 15 years and received a lifetime membership to the West Monroe and Louisiana Jaycees. He was voted a JCI Senator and past president in the Jaycees.

He is preceded in death by his Grandson, Ryan Moody; Parents, Marjorie and Bill Watson; Brother, Richard Watson; and Niece, Lexie Watson.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mrs. Hattie J. Watson; Daughter, Terri W. Scheffler and husband, Randall of N. Augusta, SC; Great grandchildren, Chloe and James Coleman of Deming, New Mexico; Sister, Jeannine W. Cole; Brother, Grayson B. Watson and wife, Sally; Sister-in-law, Nan Watson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Mark Sikes, David Fowlkes, Robbie Fowlkes, Jimmy Aulds, Randy Watson, Mike Mulhearn and Mickey Easterling.

Honorary pallbearers are the "Lunch Bunch;" Johnny Mitchell, Jerry Sikes, Frank Swayze, Abbey Bacon, Bill Lee, Ralph Ward and Dale Sanderson; the Ed Stinson Sunday School class and Ken Fletcher.

Visitation will be 9:00 A.M. until service time on Monday at the church.
