Barbara Ziegler Obituary

Ziegler, Barbara J., of Waterford, passed away December 6, 2020 at 76 years of age. Born in Pontiac to James and Isabelle (nee Shaw) Bayley. She married and later divorced Daniel D. Ziegler. Barb is survived by her life partner, Jo Nebeker; cherished mother of Daniel S.(Angie) Ziegler and David (Kelly Rische) Ziegler; grandmother of Amelia Grace, Colin, and Sadie; sister of Jim (Gwen) Bayley, Brenda Herman, Bette Szot, Jay (Jan) Bayley, the late John (Barbara Sue) Bayley, the late Beverly Gulick, and the late Bernice McCarrick; aunt of many nieces and nephews. Barb was a graduate of Pontiac Northern High School. She attended Michigan State and graduated from Wayne State with a degree in elementary education, and received her master’s plus from Oakland University. Her professional career included teaching every grade first through eighth, and became an admired administrator at the elementary and junior high school level. Barb retired in 1997 as principal of Whitman Elementary in Pontiac. After a successful and rewarding career, Barb and Jo spent over two years living full time in their motor home traveling throughout the US and Canada following the sun. In 2000, they moved into their dream home in Ivins, Utah where the sun shines every day and the snow stays in the mountains. Michigan remained home and they returned to family and dear friends in the summer. Traveling was a passion and they explored 45 different countries, visiting every continent, including Antarctica. Barb was an avid genealogist. She was passionate about leaving her family an accurate record of the Bayley/Shaw heritage, visiting and photographing family sites in England and Scotland, including a private boy’s school founded by her great uncle, Sir John Bayley, knighted for his contributions to education. Barb became ill in 2018 with cancer and fought valiantly through multiple rounds of chemo. She spent too many days in the hospital to no avail. A brilliant light went out in the world when Barbara passed. Interment will be in Ivins, Utah. A celebration of her life will be held when family and friends can safely gather together once more. Ms. Ziegler was the first Principal I had as a substitute teacher in the Pontiac School District. My first long term assignment was at Walt Whitman Elementary. From the onset , Ms. Ziegler was very kind and gentile and made sure that I was comfortable in my teaching assignment. I vividly remember her doing her “ rounds “ in the morning and throughout the day.
After that school year ended , Ms. Ziegler kept me working with any available assignment that became open in her building for several years. I am inclined to believe that because of Ms. Ziegler I went back to school , furthered my education , and am a teacher today in the Pontiac School District. Thank you Ms. Ziegler for believing in me and jump starting my career.

Rest In Peace,

Michael Mickens

Heaven just got lucky when they got Barb! What an amazing woman. We love her so much and enjoyed our in depth conversations and fierce, fun, and competitive card games with her and Aunt Jo! Barb will be greatly missed and always in our hearts.

Ms Ziegler was the best principle ever! She was so much fun and loved the children always had a big smile on! My best memory of working with her was the staff against student kickball game!! So fun. As I look at her picture she hasn’t changed a bit! Still has that beautiful smile.

Thank you for two wonderful sons and wonderful years together. As time went on, it was inevitable that we would each become more of who we were by having spent years with each other learning and growing.

Jo, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Why does it not surprise me that the two of you traveled the world? ( I remember the story you once shared about driving across the US and surviving on oranges...)
God bless you and Barbara’s family as you grieve. It’s so hard losing your special people.

With the death of every friend, family member, or pet you love, part of you is buried...
...but their contribution, to your being, of happiness, strength, and understanding, remains to sustain you in an altered world.
We hope that you will find comfort in the memories that are yours to cherish, forever❣
We have lost a dear friend, we love.
We must learn, not, how to live without her,
but to live with the love she left behind❣
Love,
Jane, Dominic, and Angeli Paterra
