Harold Brownfield Obituary

BROWNFIELD, MR. HAROLD ANDREW "HAL" JR.; age 75; of Mount Airy and husband of Sue Gatchell Brownfield; died at his home surrounded by his family and friends on Wednesday, November 27, 2013. Mr. Brownfield was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan the son of the late Harold Andrew Brownfield, Sr., and Merle Pearson Brownfield. Mr. Brownfield was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, class of 1960, and served in the United States Army as First Lieutenant with the 101st Airborne. After leaving the Army, Hal worked for Ford Motor Company and then General Motors. Hal held many executive positions at Fisher Body and then was Director of Body Engineering at Buick-Oldsmobile-Cadillac. Mr. Brownfield founded Andrew Pearson Industries in Troy, Michigan in 1989 and moved the operations to Mount Airy, North Carolina in 1994 where he served as Chairman of the Board. Surviving are his wife, Sue Gatchell Brownfield; one son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Faye Brownfield of Woodbridge, Connecticut; two grandchildren, Harry Brownfield, IV and Daisy Brownfield; and several loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Herrick, Patricia Welsbacher, and Merrianne Johnson. A Celebration of the Life of Mr. Brownfield will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Andy Griffith Playhouse in Mount Airy, North Carolina. Memorials are requested to be made to the Hal Brownfield Scholarship Fund c/o Surry Arts Council, 218 Rockford St., Mount Airy, NC 27030, or to the Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care 401 Technology Lane Mount Airy, NC 27030. I am very sorry to hear of Harold's death. We knew him many years ago in Detroit and visited him at West Point. He was too young for West Point as he graduated from high school at 16, so had to go to a prep school for a while. Martha Griffiths was the U.S. representative who recommended him for West Point. He was not called Hal in those days, but sometimes "Brownie". My sympathy to you and your family.
