Lazaro Gelstein Obituary

GELSTEIN, LAZARO (LARRY); on December 21, 2013 opened his eyes, smiled at his wife, and closed his eyes again for the last time. Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he came to the United States to complete his medical training. While working at the hospital, he was taken with a beautiful patient, Gloria Greco, and they spent 61 years happily married. Dr. Gelstein was a highly respected Thoracic Surgeon practicing at Pontiac General Hospital and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in the metro Detroit area before retiring and moving to St. Louis, Missouri. He had a fabulous sense of humor, spoke at least four languages, was a talented artist and traveled the world. He is survived by his wife Gloria; children Deborah (Thomas) Page, Laurence (Cheryl) Gelstein, Mark (Rhonda) Gelstein, Andrea (Jeffrey) Johnson; 11 grandchildren: Alison, Katie, Amy, Jennifer, Laura, Andrew, Christopher, Jonathan, Tyler, Logan, Stephanie; and many nieces and nephews. He loved singing, eating good food, dancing, and spending winters at Great Harbour Cay in the Bahamas. Of all the things he loved, he loved his wife the most. They never lost the deep affection and appreciation for each other. Gloria calls him the love of her life, and she was his. He is deeply missed. A family memorial will be held at a later time.

I worked for Dr. Gelstein back in the 70's for 7 years...I loved my job and respected him immensely. Even though this may be old news to some, I am saddened that his bright spirit is gone. I never knew his family but I always understood his great love for them.

Larry became a friend because he loved coming to our Restaurant in Great Harbour Cay. He always had a sparkle in his eye, and yes, he did love his food!! We will miss seeing him, and send all our love and condolences to his family, especially his lovely Gloria.

We have heard many stories about Mark's dad and it sounds like he was a wonderful man. I love that his final moments were spent looking lovingly at his wife. What a way to go! Our condolences to the entire family. Love, Gaston and Melanie Leoni
