William Ehlers Obituary

William Arthur Ehlers, M.D. William A. Ehlers, 91, of Lacey, passed away October 17, 2012. William Arthur Ehlers was born in Omaha, NE on August 31, 1921. He was the sixth and last child born to the marriage of William August Ehlers and Margaret Clara Schork. He received his education in Omaha Public Schools from kindergarten through medical school. He attended North High School, then the University of Omaha and then the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. He received his M.D. degree from that last school on June 16, 1945, after attending school through World War II. He took medical internships at Nix Memorial Hospital in San Antonio and at Cambridge City Hospital, Cambridge, Massachusetts; separated by 19 months of military service as a medical officer, chiefly in the hospital at Goose Bay, Labrador in 1946 and 1947. In 1949 he started a solo family practice in Cuero, Texas. He had met and dated Gail Lucille Hersman while at Nix Hospital, and they reconnected when she worked at a hospital in Kerrville, Texas. They were married May 7, 1950 in Kerrville, Texas and celebrated a honeymoon with an auto trip to Mexico City. Their only child, Susan Lynn Ehlers, was born in Cuero on May 3, 1951. In 1953 during the Korean Conflict, the Air Force decided that they needed his service, despite his futile appeal to Senator Lyndon B. Johnson. He was sent all the way to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, and by October 1953, was "released" again. He and Gail decided to look for greener pastures than drought-stricken Texas, and drove to Nebraska and then to the Northwest. The Washington State Medical Society reported that a prospective site was in Lacey, a small but growing suburb of Olympia, the state capital. They chose Lacey and the businesses there supported their arrival and start of practice. Forty-five years later of family practice finished with retirement in 1998. A significant business adjunct started in joining Robert L. Blume and his wife in starting Capital Development Company in Lacey. This company expanded greatly, building South Sound Center and then thirty plus other commercial centers throughout the United States. After 55 years of agreeably happy marriage, his wife, Gail, passed away early on November 23, 2005. Her gravesite and marker are at Woodlawn Cemetery in Lacey, and his gravesite is next to her. Dr. Ehlers is survived by his daughter, Susan Ehlers. Funeral Services will be at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1925 Boulevard Road S.E., Olympia on Friday, October 26, 2012 at 1:00 p.m., followed by interment at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross, Providence St. Peter's Foundation, Westminster Presbyterian Church, or your favorite charity. Dear Susan, I was so pleased when your father and I connected about the Ehlers family history. He was very generous in sharing his information. I was able to learn a bit more about the family through my own exploration because of the information he shared with me. I can tell from reading the posts here that he was a generous and caring man in all aspects of his life. My condolences to you on the loss of your father. I hope to keep in touch with you through the family history links. You can find me on ancestry.com. Susan Olsson

It was a real privilege to have been a colleague of Dr. Ehlers. He was always genuinely concerned about his patients and their families. He was a familiar presence at St. Peter Hospital when assisting in the operating room and on the nursing floors at all hours of the day and night.
He was a kind, gentle and caring person as well as being an excellent physician. The world needs many more like him. He will be greatly missed.
The photo shows him without a tie which was very unusual.

Susan,
I am so appreciative that you called me about the passing of your dear Father. The two times that we were able to visit each other here in Omaha hold such wonderful memories.
So interesting to read the other Remembrances in this Book. He was so loved! I was able to contact Susan Olsson, my Cousins' Daughter and give her the message. Susan and your Dad did work on the Ehlers Genealogy so I knew she would want to know.
You are in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time.

Susan Our Deepest Sympathy goes out to you in your time of need. You're father was the best Dr. in the world. He literally saved my son, who was diagnoesed with rhuematic fever, and this is such a rare disease that could have took my son, but with your dad's expertise he is still with us and for that I am truely gratful. He was also my 2 daughters doctor untill he retired. Which I'm sure was well deserved after all his years of dedication. We will truly miss him & you will be in our prayers, also to Wilma and Cindy We miss you all.

Dr Ehlers cared about his patients, he took the time to really listen to what you were saying, and he took the time to explain things to you also. he was a real giant in his profession. I was sorry when he retired but happy also that he would finally have the time to spend with his wife. He had many patients from Nisqually, which included grandparents, parents their children. Dr. Ehlers took care of our entire family for over 40 years starting with my parents ( Vincent & Catherine Kearin). When I grew up and had kids of my own ( two of which he delivered) and one of us needed urgent care after hours, he would meet us in his office sometimes late at night. He even made a few house calls. He got really excited when I had something that needed to be removed like a mole or an appendix. He was very special and we will miss him dearly. Susan, you must be very proud of your Dad, I know he was very proud of you. You are in our prayers. The Mix Family

Dr.Ehlers would make rounds at St. Peter Hospital, usually late evening. He was caring & concerned for his patients. Treated patients and nurses with geninue respect. He took time to listen. Never failed, he would always show up in his suit & tie ready to greet his patients. Enjoyed our many visits.

Dr. Ehlers, small in stature and a great man. He delivered me in 1962 and continued to be my doctor and my son's doctor. He was a gentle, kind soul.
