Simon Bernard Clifton
November 30, 1925 - September 9, 2018
Simon Bernard "Bernie" Clifton, age 92, formally of Plymouth, Indiana, passed away Sunday, Sept. 9, in Winston Salem, N.C.
Bernie was born on Nov. 30, 1925 in Culver, to Bernard Ellis and Nellie (Hatten) Clifton.
Bernard married the former Joanne Washburn in October of 1947. The Clifton's had enjoyed 60 years of marriage when Joanne passed away on April 16, 2008. Bernie honorably served his country in the United States Army during WWII with the Rainbow Division. Bernie was a bus driver for the Indiana Motor Bus Company for 22 years. He loved country music, the beach, the New York Yankees and the Chicago Cubs.
Those left to cherish Bernie's memory are his children, Donovan (Diane) Clifton of Winston Salem, N.C., Debra Schoonover of St. Petersburg, Fla., Robert Clifton of San Antonio, Texas., and Rick Clifton of Seattle, Wash., also surviving are Bernie's numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, his two sisters, Nancy (John) Strycker and Wahnetta (Tom) Sausman; numerous nieces and nephews.
Bernie is preceded in passing by his parents, his loving wife, his daughter, Patricia Willis, his two grandchildren, Bryan David Willis and Kara LeAnn Willis; his three brothers, Edgar (Oletta) Clifton, Charles (Imogene) Clifton and Donovan (Lucy) Clifton.
The Van Gilder Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements for the Clifton family. A funeral will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the Poplar Grove United Methodist Church, St. Rd. 10 Culver, Ind. 46511 at noon with Pastor Henry Sprunger officiating.
Burial will follow in the Maxinkuckee I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Culver.
A time of visiting with the Clifton family will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the Poplar Grove United Methodist Church, St. Rd. 10 Culver, Ind. 46511 from 10 a.m. to noon.
The Clifton family request memorial contributions in lieu of flowers be made to the Poplar Grove United Methodist Church.
