Finlay NEWTON-HOWES Obituary

We are heartbroken by Fin's death on 20 August 2025 in a road accident, aged 20. Beloved son of Nicola Daly and Giles Newton-Howes, and their partners Charles McGuinness and Merrin Rutherford. Adored brother to James (dec), Toby (Rose), and Teo. Deeply loved by our large extended whanau and his many friends. Fin was truly special, a natural leader who brought enthusiasm, care and presence, a brilliant student and NZ representative sport climber. His loss will be felt keenly. In Fin's memory, we are establishing an ongoing fund to support young climbers. I was so very sad to hear this news, what a loss. I was Fin's social studies teacher in yr 9 and 10. Always smiling and positive he was a pleasure to teach. Much aroha and awhi.

Fin climbed with my son Mac as part of Dynomites and they both went to the World Youth Climbing championships in Seoul in 2023. Later on that year I took both of them on a trip to Flock Hill to go bouldering. I was amazed by how much energy and enthusiasm Fin had as well as an incredible talent for climbing. He was super friendly and a really nice guy with a real passion for life. I was impressed to hear how he worked so hard doing part time jobs at Secondary School so his was able to fund a trip to Europe before he started University. It is a massive loss to lose him so young. Lot's of love and condolences to his family.
