Craig NAYLOR Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Apr. 17 to Apr. 19, 2015.
NAYLOR, Dr. Craig K.
January 26, 1942 – April 13, 2015
It is with very heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Dr. Craig K. Naylor who passed away peacefully at his home on April 13, 2015 after a brief struggle with brain cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his parents Art and Sylvia Naylor. Craig was an amazing man in many ways. He was a loving husband to wife Carolyn, a devoted father to daughters Jodi and Candice (Shim) and stepdaughter Erin (David), an affectionate grandfather to Kira, Matthew and Kaelen. He was looking forward to meeting his newest granddaughter whose appearance he missed by a few short weeks. He had an extremely close relationship with his brothers, Brent (Gayle) and Wayne (Wendy). The happy times spent together will always be treasured. He will also be sadly missed by his nieces Chelsea, Erin and Susan (Kris) and nephew Adam (Holly). Dr. Naylor was highly respected by his colleagues in the dental profession. He graduated from the University of Alberta School of Dentistry in 1967 and received his Prosthetic Certification in 1980. He was a member of numerous dental societies and professional organizations, including the Canadian Academy of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics, the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, the International College of Prosthodontists and the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. He was the past president of the BC Society of Prosthodontists and the Canadian Academy of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics. Craig also held fellowships in the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. Dr. Naylor also presented lectures and courses to dental schools and professional organizations in Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan, all while maintaining a full-time practice in Vancouver, BC. His career was one of impeccable professionalism. Craig was passionate about the ethics and continuing education of his profession and gave generously of his time to dental study groups. He was instrumental in creating The Sirona Learning Centre. Through his vision, his dedication and his impressive reputation within the dental community, this project was able to move forward from conception to reality. As passionate in his leisure activities as he was in his career, Craig was an accomplished skier and avid golfer. He enjoyed spending his winters with his wife Carolyn on the golf courses close to their home in Scottsdale. His most constant love was for the water. Craig had put himself through dental college working as a lifeguard for the City of Vancouver and was a longstanding member of the RVYC. Summers in Desolation Sound were a great source of pleasure. His boating pals are going to miss his dry wit and his ready smile. Craig was a very special person whose integrity never wavered. He approached every endeavour with the same focused attention to detail. He had a wonderful sense of humour and was not afraid to laugh at himself when this attention to detail was not as fully appreciated as he thought it might be. This lovely man is going to be dearly missed by his family, friends and colleagues. A special thank you to Dr. House and Craig's care giving team, Christian, Steven and Ben. Charitable donations may be made to the charity of your choice. A private service will be held in his honour.

I'm sad to know of our loss, and so glad I got to see him at one of the reunions. I told him I remembered him walking down the halls with his pink shirt and under arm briefcase, and how handsome he was! He'll be sorely missed, but so good to know he made such a valuable and loving contribution to this world.

It was at the 25 year mark of his care that I asked Craig if he thought we might call each other by our first names. More years passed and I was both sad and happy to wish him well in his retirement. Such an impeccable professional and kind man.

It was over 40 years ago that I walked into one of Vancouver's dental labs and asked for recommendations for a dentist. Craig Naylor was on the top of the list. It changed my life. His skill and technique and finesse were lightyears beyond anything I had ever experienced. And as a person, you could not ask for finer. You could not help loving this man in every way. He will be very missed by very many.

As a patient of Dr. Naylor's for two decades, I am truly sorry to hear of his passing. He was a superb dentist with the gentlest touch. I always had complete confidence in his work and was, first of all, sorry to see him retire - while I still had teeth in my mouth! - and devastated to hear of his illness and death. My condolences to his family and friends. He was a lovely man.

Craig became part of my family in 1983 when the Naylors and Smiths merged. We still can't believe he's gone - he was far too young and fit when we last saw him at Xmas. Being so far away is difficult when you know your people are hurting - please know our hearts are full of family and fond memories. I will remember him most for his awesome laugh and beautiful teeth (he'll like that;). Rest in peace Uncle Craig. All my love to the family xoxoxo
