Jack EGERS Obituary

Passed away peacefully on Friday, September 10, 2021. Jack was a devoted family man and will be profoundly missed by his wife Wendy (nee Beteau), son Mark (Deanna) and daughter Cori (Rob). Cherished Papa of Jake (Rae), Luke, Sydney and Zack and great-grandfather to Levi. Dear brother of Kathy Mitchell (Mike), Bonnie Irvine (Steve) and predeceased by brothers Jim and Gerry and parents Weldon and Fay Egers and Bern and Marg Beteau. Jack lived a life so full that it's hard to do it justice in a short tribute. At the young age of 15 he moved from his hometown of Lively, Ontario to play for the Kitchener Rangers where he met the love of his life, Wendy. He went on to have a storied career in the NHL with the New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues and Washington Capitals. Among the many stories to be told of his career in the NHL, Jack is an original member of the Capitals, who claimed him in the 1974 NHL Expansion Draft, and holds the distinction of scoring the first winning goal for the team on October 17, 1974, against the Chicago Black Hawks. When his hockey career came to an end, Jack brought his family back to Canada where he became a firefighter with the Kitchener Fire Department (KFD), ultimately ascending to the rank of Captain. He always held dear the pride and brotherhood found with the KFD and all his first responder colleagues. But most of all, Jack took pride and treasured dearly the love of the family he and Wendy created and the close friendships he made along the way. An avid story and joke teller, he was in his element entertaining anyone he crossed paths with in his captivating and charming way. He lived life to the fullest and spent much of his personal time golfing, hunting, fishing, and traveling. Suffice it to say he will be sorely missed by many. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Sohaib and the amazing ICU staff at Woodstock Hospital. Jack marveled at the care and compassion he received from everyone over the past couple of weeks and we are so grateful to you all. To keep everyone safe in these times, the family will lay Jack to rest in a private ceremony and look forward to welcoming extended family and friends to a Celebration of Life in the coming Spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation in Jack's memory. Arrangements entrusted to Brock and Visser Funeral Home, Woodstock, 519-539-0004. Jack, Wendy, Mack and Cori where neighbors when he and the family moved to DC (Burke, Va) I was 14 and played hockey locally, To say the least, I was awe struck when first meeting Jack. Then I experienced just want a nice guys he was. He would take me to Caps practices and got to meet and "hang out" with Ace Bailey, Michele Belemur, Blair Stewart and so many others. He also became my stick supplier for a couple years!! Jack was such a nice and welcoming guy. One crazy/funny story about Jack I tell frequently...one evening Jack was grilling steaks for dinner and a neighbor´s dog came over and pulled one off the grill. Needless to say, Jack responded in a way only Jack could. He had a few choice words for the dog and chased it away. He went inside, returned with a hammer and a few nails, grabbed the remains of the one steak, took it over to the neighbor´s and nailed it to the front door! Absolutely priceless!

Wendy, Mark , Cori... if you read this, just know Jack made such a positive impression on me as well as you Wendy.

I wish you all peace and many happy memories.

Dave Nelson.

As a 13 year old, I sold programs at the Omaha Knights home games at Aksarben Coliseum in 1969 and 1970, so I got to watch Jack play almost every home game that year. I can still vividly remember the crowd going crazy whenever the puck got passed back to Jack at the point or in the slot and he wound up and let go with that booming slap shot! Everybody knew that a good percentage of them were going to wind up in the net! He was pretty much the best player on the team that year and it pleases me to discover from reading his obituary, that he was also a fantastic person too! Thanks for the great memories Jack! They still linger with me over 50 years later!

We did not know Jack well, but had the privilege of meeting him once. My son and I have collected autographed hockey pucks for many years, and when we learned Jack was an NHL alumni and living in nearby Wellesley, we contacted him. Jack was so friendly and welcoming and happily shared stories and signed a puck for our collection.

It must have been wonderful to have know Jack as a friend or to have been part of his family. You can tell a great deal about a person by the kindness that they demonstrate to strangers. We feel so fortunate to have met Jack, and will always treasure his memory!

Our most sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Jack's debut season with the NYR was an exciting time. He had a rocket shot and scored some big goals. I'm saddened by his death and offer my sincere condolences to his family and friends.
