Roger Schultz Obituary

ROGER EDWARD SCHULTZ, beloved father, brother, friend, and Bermudian legend, passed away peacefully on June 24th, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on November 28th, 1949, to Joseph Nicholas Schultz and Leah Mary Richold, Roger lived a life as bold, vibrant, and unrepeatable as the man himself.Roger was a true original - a man who lived entirely on his own terms, chasing what he loved with wit, passion, and humor. He was a fierce competitor, a loyal friend, a loving but unconventional father, and someone whose presence you never forgot. An extraordinary basketball talent, Roger played for teams including the Somerset Suns, Horse & Buggy Trotters, The T-shirt Xpress, and Tucker's Tees. He etched his name into the history books as Bermuda's all-time scoring champion, 3-point scoring champion, and free-throw champion, achieving an astonishing 95% shooting rate for free throws. His career spanned the Naval Annex League, the Bermuda Basketball Association, and the U.S. Naval Air Station League. Roger was also the youngest player from Bermuda to go on tour with a VP Squadron, a reflection of his talent and determination. He played with â€" and against â€" some unforgettable characters: David "Water Bug" Fox, John "Helicopter" Perinchief, Dan "Mad Dog" Tucker, Larry "The Bomber" Brinson, Barry McDonald, David Brinning, and so many more. Each game was a stage, and Roger always knew what to do when he called out: "Give me the ball."But Roger's love for life extended well beyond the basketball court. His heart belonged to the ocean, and he found joy in lobster diving, fishing, boating, immersing himself in nature and the company of animals, cooking, and enjoying the company of friends and family. Few things brought him more peace than a day in the garden with his beloved dog Honey by his side, the breeze in his hair, and a glass of Cockspur rum and coke in hand.He is survived by his cherished children, Harrison and Lexie Schultz, his sister Joanne Rumpf, and his loyal companion, Honey. Roger's legacy is one of authenticity, talking trash, humor, and heart.A celebration of Roger's life will be held at St. Anne's Church, Southampton, on July 16th, 2025, at 2.00pm. A celebration of life will follow at 36 Highwood Lane, Paget. Please RSVP those wishing to attend Roger's celebration of life at [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Roger in the way he lived - take a dip in the ocean, tell a great story, laugh hard, or toast him with a glass of rum and coke. Roger Edward Schultz was one of a kind. And we will all remember and miss him. "Give me the ball, that's mines, what you suckin'? We encourage everyone to wear colors to celebrate Roger's life. What a great overview of Roger's unconventional approach to life. I didn't know him well, but I reckon it's pretty accurate. Gosh, wouldn't we all hope to be held in such esteem when our time comes!

I am sure that it will give a chuckle to his family and friends as they get through this difficult period.
