18th January 2011. Dear Mary, I have just read the news of Jordy's passing in my occasional search of the IOD websites. I was on the foredeck of "Coquette", sail number 5, in the early 1970s and at the IOD Worlds in Larchmont nearly 40 years ago, when 3 of the 5 of us were architects. Jordy was a fine sailor, a fine skipper, a fine competitor and a fine man. I admired him greatly. Please accept my heartfelt good wishes at this time. Truly yours, Brian Crabtree, Chaze sur Argos, France.

ODE to Jordy Walker
When waves come crashing on the shore,
Spewing the sands of time,
They’ll deposit droplets of memories,
Of moments so sublime,….
When the oceans beckoned his ‘Spirit’
To hoist her sails to the sky,
And capture the wind’s capricious ways,
To ‘sink’ or ‘swim’~ perhaps WIN????
Or, at least, give it a Darn Good TRY!
When the ‘Cup of Gold’ is hoisted,
It will be filled with Jordy’s smile,
And his boats will form a line,
For he was their ‘Master Mariner’,
The ‘blueprint’ for one of a kind,
And his Life was of‘One Design’...
All our Best to Mary, Samantha, Blythe, Elizabeth and the Walker Family ~

Mary, Sacha, Samantha, Blythe, Elizabeth and family,
I am very sorry for your loss and you all have my deepest sympathies.
I knew Jordy ever since Junior Sailing at the RBYC and I remember him most for his generosity and enthusiasm.
Onion Bun was in the first birth next to the old wooden dock and was an oasis for tools and our tender for many "fun days". Many great memories include Jordy driving Onion Bun.
During another sunny summer day on the RBYC dock, I remember watching Bloodhound being rigged on the dock and being so shocked and impressed to learn Jordy actually built Bloodhound. WOW! At that point, in my mind, I knew my first ship builder. This was very cool!
I will always have many great memories of Jordy.

To the Walker Family,
Jordy's passing marks an irreplaceable loss in sailing and the community. He was one of the good guys in the world. His generous spirit, unwavering sense of decency and fairness touched so many people. What a terrible loss but what a brilliant life. An example to us all. And for those of us lucky to have known him, what a great friend. It is impossible to forget such a wonderful person. Deepest condolences.

I was so sad to hear of Jordy's passing. He made a huge impact on sailing in Bermuda and it was a privilege to know such a man with a ready laugh and a twinkle in his eye. I remember him in Fitted Dinghy meetings and when I worked at the RBYC and he was so involved with the Gold Cup with his IOD's. Bermuda has lost a favourite son. My thoughts are with all the Walker, Simmons and worldwide family at this sad time.

Amazing Mary, you and Jordy were generous and welcoming Colin Searle and myself in making our new home at Tanglewood Poolhouse. To the Walker Family,
Being welcomed by Jordy's widespread arms and expansive grin upon arrival at the RBYC terrace at the start of Race Week has always been one of my greatest pleasures and fondest memories. Whether crossing tacks in an IOD, repairing boats after the racing's done, swapping tall tales, discussing how to expand the fleets, or extolling the beauty of an IOD, no one rivalled his pure and infectious joy in all aspects of sailing. I only just realized that in my own small corner of the sport I have been trying to emulate him all along.
What exhilirating and wonderful memories, but what a painful loss.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Jordy who I've had the pleasure of knowing through the sport of sailing. Jordy was always a great supporter of junior sailing event having taken an enormous amount of personal time to be on the water to officiate events. He was always there to show his support. I have great admiration for Jordy who I know will be sorely missed by all.

Dear Mary and Family,
We are so sorry to hear of Jordy's passing. Since racing against Jordy and Blythe years ago in the King Edward Gold Cup, I have respected Jordy's skill, sportsmanship and sense of humor. I recall some great parties at your home with Jordy smoothing over some of the feathers ruffled on the water! When he was a Bermuda Race inspector,I laugh at Jordy coming alongside my boat as we crossed the finish line, in a surprise inspection, asking me to show him our anchor. I ran below and grabbed our small anchor, held it up, and he demanded that i show him our biggest anchor. We of course complied, and he then said he was only joking, but bought me a dark and stormy later at the RBYC bar to make up for it.
All sailors and friends are better for having known Jordy.

Dear Mary,
The IOD Class as it is today, and all the fun we on the Norwegian Wood team have had together over the past 25 years, would not have happened but for Jordy. He loved the boats and the competition, and never ceased working to create opportunities for others to share the love. Our hearts and prayers are with you, your family, and Sacha. Our generation of sailors are all better for the privilege of knowing and working with Jordy.
All the best,

Dear Mary,
I did not know, yet somehow knew... and today I found this newspaper onllne and unfortunately it confirmed it to be true... that Jordy has gone. I am so very sorry to hear that news... but I'm sure your difficult task of bringing him home made everything as good as it could be.
You both are an inspiration - I am so grateful that we had some time together at Hippocrates... yours and his kindness, courage and smiling spirit are gifts I will always treasure.
My deepest sympathies for you and your family's loss and the loss of everyone who had the pleasure, in my case all too brief, to meet the sweet heart and soul of a man who was Jordy.
Peace be with you....

Dear Walkers,
How wonderful the friendship of the Walkers and Motleys, whether competing against Jordy in IODs or hosting Elizabeth and Laura during their Olympic campaign.
It is the tradition that the last place finisher at an IOD World Championship be awarded a copy of Arthur Knapp's "Race your boat right." Stepping fcrward to receive this treasured(?) souvenir of a week's sailing in Marblehead, Jordy remarked, "This is the third copy I have received, and as you can see none of them have done me any good!"
He brought humor and wisdom to every situation, but above all proportion to the various elements of life.
IODs sailing into a storm is how we feel in losing him.

Dearest Mary,Blyth,Samatha,Elizabeth and Family,
It is with the greatest heart felt sorrow I have heard the sad news of the passing of Jordy; please accept my deepest condolences for your loss.
The memories of my time in Bermuda are always in my thoughts; my experiences at work, on the water and in the boat sheds are filled with the character of Jordy's being...his passion, dedication, diligence, and of course his incomparable sense of humour. At times he was my employer, my mentor, co-worker and my friend...roles in which he naturally excelled as a human being. He truly started me on my professional career in architecture and he taught me the lessons that shaped my last 25 years in this industry. I have fond memories of our daily time we spent together for those years...he made the experience of designing buildings (and sailing of course)an enjoyable world for which to be a part.
He was a man of great stature and he will be sadly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have come to know him....
Sincerely Yours,

Jordy,
My family have always considered the Walkers as part of ours – since we first met. Your help and kindness has always been a part of us, and been instrumental in our lives, and loyalty to OBM. We are sincerely sorry to hear of this abrupt news, and are devastated to learn of it’s untimely onset. Please, Mary, Blythe, and Sam, consider us part of your family, and please let us know what we can do. Jordy, thank you so much for all that you’ve done for us – your kindness and generosity to an immigrant Welsh family! – your contribution to Architecture and the progression and nurturing of the young ones – thank you. Your constantly bright and optimistic outlook on the business and social side of OBM, and the aptitude with which you took over from John. I will always see your smile in my mind, and hear your wonderfully course Bermudian accent – you will be sorely missed, and I pray that Christ will be with you always.
I’ve attached a very special photo from my parents early days in Bermuda – at their wedding. I wish these days would come back, and I grew up loving the stories
With all our love and eternal gratitude,

I am writing to express my deepest condolences to all of you. I recall spending an evening with Jordy at the IBA barbecue a few years+ back! Once he found out I was John White's daughter he almost adopted me as his daughter for the night! I couldn't help but be drawn to his warm, friendly personality. We engaged in wonderful conversation that evening. Although this is the only memory of him that I can recall, (I am sure my Father, now residing in the U.S.A., will remember many, many more with me included!) it is a permanent fixture in my mind and I will never forget what a warm, jolly, gentleman he was. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Fondly,
Lee Anne (White) Nelmes.

Dear Mary,
Lee and I have been praying for the comfort of you and your family during this very sad time. Also we have been fondly remembering our "wild" honeymoon party [50 years ago] at the old Bermudiana with Jordy et. al.. It was so much fun, we were almost asked to leave the hotel.
I am also remembering Jordy as king of the kite flyers on many Good Fridays at "High and Dry".
Love from the Springwood Bunch.

Dear Walker Family,
My most sincere condolences to the entire family. Jordy was a kindhearted and jovial person. When he visited the OBMI Miami office, he would always share jokes and stories with us. His unique and bright personality will remain in our hearts for years to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time.

Dear Mary,
Reid and I send lots of love to you and all your family at this very sad time. My memories of Jordy go all the way back to his home on Grape Bay when I visited with Sasha and to all the fun we use to have at the August Moon Regattas. Our families grew up together "between the walls" and It was a very special time. xx Linda

Mary:
Please accept, on behalf of the world wide membership of the International One Design Class, our sincerest condolences and prayers to you and your family in this your hour of grief.
Jordy was a 'giant' in the history of the IOD class. I can say without fear of contadiction, the IOD Class would not be the thriving class that it is were it not for his determination and drive. Eleven established fleets and two more in development bear testimony to his work.
Jordy will be missed by his many friends around the world. For those of us who continue to be involved it will be our task to ensure that his legacy lives on.
Again, our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I'll miss you Jordy. Thank you for everything you've done for sailing and for me over the many years. The IOD class won't be the same. Sail fast, sail hard and sail free! My love to Mary, Sam, Blythe, Elsie and the whole family.

Dear Mary and family,
As you know you and Jordy have been in our thoughts and prayers during this last year. Jordy may no longer be with you here on earth but he will never be far away. He is just harder to see and hear.
There will be a star in the sky you have never seen before. It will be larger and brighter than all the rest. From his place in Heaven he will watch over you all until you are together again for eternity.
We will see you after we get to Bermuda on the 27th.
My memories of our childhood Easter visits are many and all very special.
With love from both Eddie and me,
Rozzie
