Gerard Middleton, greatly loved father, dear husband to Muriel, and Professor Emeritus at McMaster University, died peacefully in Hamilton on November 2, 2021. He was born in South Africa, educated in England at Mount St. Mary's boarding school, and later received a doctorate in geology at Imperial College London. He emigrated to Canada in 1954 and was a proud Canadian citizen. Gerard had a long career as a professor of geology at McMaster University. After retirement, his interests included researching and writing about old stone houses of the Hamilton area, biographies of British and Canadian scientists, and the sedimentology and wines of the Niagara region. Gerard is survived by Muriel (nee Zinkewich), his wife of 62 years; his children Laurence (Robin), Teresa (John), and Margaret (Sean); and grandchildren Katrina (Ben), Robert, Thomas, and Charles. He was a devoted father and husband, and his family was blessed to be able to spend time with him throughout the pandemic. The Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, Ancaster, where Gerard was a member for over 60 years. Interment to follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.
