Brian MULLAN Obituary

It is with broken hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Brian John Mullan on July 19, 2021 at the young age of 67. He passed at Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice surrounded by his family after a brave and courageous battle with cancer. Brian leaves behind his beloved wife, Loretta, of 41 fun and incredible years. He was a loving father to Ashley (Michael), and Stephanie (Brandon), and adoring Papa to Elliot and Parker. Little brother to Wayne (Carol) and "Uncle B" to many nieces and nephews and family friends.

Brian spent 35 years (1974-2009), as a proud Hamilton Police Officer spanning a variety of roles including Constable, Inspector, and ultimately rising to Chief of Police in 2003, where he served for 6 years, retiring in 2009. Brian didn't stop there - he continued to work after retirement on both the Parole Board of Canada and Judiciary Appointment Committee. He was a proud Hamiltonian, with an overall love for the city, but especially, the Hamilton Tiger Cats and looked forward to his weekly Tiger Cat Council meeting. Brian was a member of many organizations and board of directors including, FBI National Academy of Associations, Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, and Hamilton Health Sciences.

Brian loved to hang out with his best friends, especially the Hackers Club on and off the golf course, and lifelong friends, the Noble Family. Brian, Loretta and the family want to give special thanks to Dr. Lepic, Dr. Burke, Dr. Graham Fraser and the health care team at Juravinski Hospital. The family would also like to thank the amazing team at Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice for caring for Brian in the final days of his life.

I worked with Brian for about 25 years, and always admired his kindness, sense of humour and dedication to the Hamilton Police Service. I first knew him in the Fraud Office, and later as his Admin Assistant to Chief of Police. My heart goes out to you Loretta and your girls. You can feel so good about the fact that you were such a wonderful life partner for him. xoxoxo

Loretta, Ashley, Stephanie

It was a honour to work along side Brian as we served our hometown in our respective agencies. It was always comforting to know that he had my back and would be there 24/7, if our community needed him. He devoted long hours, missed many special occasions and personal events while competently fulfilling his duties as Chief. And for that we all thank you, his family, for being so supportive and understanding. He will be surely missed. Please accept our deepest condolences. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

To Loretta and family, I offer my sincerest sympathy for Brian's passing. He has been taken too soon. I watched Brian rise through the ranks and at every level he remained friendly and approachable to everyone. I enjoyed his company and his leadership when he was our Superintendent at the Mountain Station. He was deserving of being our Chief. He shouldered a lot of criticism as Chief and handled it as a true leader.
May he rest in peace. He will remain in my prayers.

I had the pleasure of working with Brian on the Parole Board of Canada. He was more than just a colleague - he was a good humoured and very competent Member of the PBC, who mentored me, and others, as we learned how to best ensure the safety of the public while, at the same time, helping those who needed it, to begin the sometimes difficult but critical process of reintegrating into society as law-abiding citizens. He was a really good man. I cannot say much more than to note that I am saddened by his death and that I truly hope his wife and family remember him for the honourable and righteous man that he was. May he Rest In Peace!

In loving memory of a wonderful person. He was one of most personable and friendly Senior Officers I had the honour to serve with. 10-7 Brian.

I had the extreme pleasure of growing up with Brian through public and high school. He was part of the "hood" that would congregate at Hampton Park and then Barton to swing golf clubs, play baseball, football or road hockey as the seasons demanded. His infectious laugh and smile made him someone you wanted on your team or side and when disorganized sports turned to organized ones in high school, Brian was a ferocious teammate, again, one you were happy to have. When he became our Police Chief, he and I would find time in our busy days to sneak away to Forbidden City for their famous Soup Bowl lunch where we would catch up and reminisce. In our later years, many Barton High alumni have gathered in the summer for golf and lunches in the winter when possible. There will be many glasses raised in his honour and our hearts and deepest condolences are with Loretta and family at this difficult time.

Loretta & Family:

As you know, Brian and I worked closely together for several years. He was a solid, hard-working police officer, and never complained. His eventual rise through the ranks was no surprise to me.

During the years that we worked together we continually traded stories about our families, and it was clear to me how much he loved you all.

As we can all agree, he is gone much too soon. Treasure your many wonderful memories, and I pray it comforts you through this difficult time.
