Edward Gill Obituary

Passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 11, 2021 in Hamilton, Ontario, at the age of 71, following a 15-month journey with Glioblastoma (GBM) brain cancer. Ted was predeceased by his father Murray Albert Gill, and is survived by his mother Grace Erie Gill (née Miller), wife Jennifer Elizabeth Burch Gill, and his children Simon Edward (Janet), Ruth Grace, and Anna Elizabeth (Greg). He also leaves behind his three siblings, 8 nieces and nephews, many extended family and friends. Ted was born in Toronto, ON, and attended elementary school in Sault Ste. Marie. In the employ of Bell, his father Murray brought the family to Pointe-Claire, QC for Ted's High School years. He graduated with honours from Queen's University with a degree in Civil Engineering ('72) and a Masters of Planning ('81). He met life partner Jennie in his last year of undergraduate study, and the two were married on June 2, 1979. Ted's long and distinguished career in transportation engineering and planning was propelled by a love of Hamilton and a passion for community building. After early roles as an engineer and planner for MTO and Durham Region, he realized his passion with the City of Hamilton. His roles with Hamilton (City and Region) included Traffic Engineer, Project Manager, Director of Engineering, and Acting Commissioner of Engineering; and his principal contributions were made as Senior Director of the Roads Division. With integrity and professionalism, he contributed to Hamilton's evolution and growth, leading transformational projects which included the Downtown Hamilton Integrated Transportation and Land Use Plan, Regional Bicycle Study, King St. E. Revitalization, and Transportation Master Plan. He contributed to the formation of the Hamilton Waterfront Trust and served on its board, volunteering his broad expertise to invigorate Hamilton's waterfront, guaranteeing a lasting legacy of accessible waterfront for residents to enjoy. His vision, resolute commitment, and kind, principled approach, earned him the love and respect of Ontario's planning community. His career later led him to the private sector, where he worked with Stantec, MRC, and eventually MMM Group through his company, Ted Gill Consulting, followed by 4 years of retirement. Ted enjoyed an adventurous and amazing life, leaving an impressive legacy in not only his career accomplishments but also in the lives of so many of his family and friends. Always kind, patient, and generous, he leaves a hole in many hearts, but also countless fond memories. Hamilton and the Kirkendall neighbourhood have lost a valuable friend and activist - Ted contributed to the community through coaching Kirkendall kids' soccer and baseball, teaching skiing at Chedoke Ski Club, coaching basketball with the Ryerson HBA, volunteering at Victoria Curling Club, organizing neighbourhood fireworks displays, and helping to organize an unforgettable annual neighbourhood ski trip to Killington for 21 years. This legacy is a testament to his dependability and unyielding motivation to nurture and build community through volunteering. Family was of paramount importance. He built a family cottage on Buck Lake and spent summers with his large extended family and friends. Ted recently attended the 50th 'Annual Turkey' weekend with childhood and Queen's friends, having only ever missed two. His love of camping was inTents (ha!), adventuring far and wide, notably once spending a summer with his family traveling across the continent, and much later, with his wife exploring Newfoundland. He never missed a season of sailing and skiing. Ted offered his time generously, and also philanthropically contributed to many worthy causes, including cancer research (Movember), cardiovascular disease research, the Hamilton & Halton United Way, local sport, the Trans Canada Trail, local journalism, international health & education, mental health, and academics. The Hamilton community, neighbourhood, friends, and family, have lost a truly extraordinary champion, advocate, organizer, companion, husband and father. Memory of arriving in a new very cold country with no clothing for Duncan - due to our luggage not being loaded at Johannesburg airport. But within minutes cousin Katherine was on the phone to Ted and he arrived with an assortment of clothing for Duncan to try on and he was sorted out, what an absolute life saver he was ! A simple gesture like this - with so much meaning, we were so grateful and appreciative xxx

My remembrance of Ted included a family trip in mid eighties to Victoria car trip with Jen ,Simon, Ruth, and Anna. I think his father-in -law Doug also vacationed with them. It was a fun get together with our children sharing a swimming pool with Ted's full participation in sharing pool with baby Anna, and our two young elementary school kids Lawrence & Lisa, BBQ's & spectacular hikes to Sombrio or French Beaches just half an hour drive from our house 15 minutes from Victoria .. I also had the best visit with Ted's family and children in their home of Hamilton for a nursing reunion in London Ontario about 20 years ago. I really admired Hamilton's new waterfront renovation, housing project and the renovation of Hamilton Mountain~ quite the expert civil planner Ted. Our heart felt thoughts are with Jen, Simon & Janet , Ruth and Anna and brother Tyler, Julie and children & Ted's mother at such a sad time. Ted will abide in our thoughts forever and we are sending our positive thoughts in your sorrow,. I feel Ted would want you to live your lives as fully as you can, like Ted did
