Henry HYND Obituary

Peacefully on Tuesday, December 29th, 2020 after a long battle with Alzheimer's, but ultimately from complications from COVID-19, at age 87. He passed peacefully with his loving wife Margaret by his side. His family knew him as a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather, and a tireless worker for a cause he believed in. He fought the good fight, firm in his beliefs that he was on the just side of every battle. Harry was known for breaking out in song at any opportunity, whether there was an available microphone or not, he was the happiest when he sang. He started out in Methil Fife, Scotland, braving a transatlantic crossing in 1957 without family at his side to seek out a better life in Canada. He met his wife Margaret through a friend, and began a lifelong close and loving marriage. Arriving in Hamilton from humble beginnings in Scotland working in the coal mines, becoming a steward in the National Union of Mineworkers. He immigrated to Canada where a promised job at Avro Aero was retracted due to hard economic times. He started his working life's journey, working at Stelco in 1958 where he became an active member of USW Local 1005 as plant grievance chair. Joining the Steelworkers staff in 1971, he served members in Hamilton, Niagara Peninsula , Toronto and Vancouver all while working his way up to head up District 6. He served on the Mohawk College Board of Governors, was a member of the Ontario Federation of Labour's Education Committee, and was Education Coordinator for the Steelworkers District 6 for 6 years prior to his appointment as Director. He retired in 2002, as a retiree served on the EI appeals committee and as SOAR Vice President and remained active in these endeavors for many years. He enjoyed many years of retirement with his wife, traveling a lot and vacationing in Cuba, his favorite spot, where he spent untold hours searching the beach for shells. He never quite lost his Scottish accent and was a proud Scotsman. He was a skilled negotiator at work and even with his daughters. Adored husband of Margaret. Devoted father of Carol Craig (Bill) and Susan D'Angelo (Sebastiano). Cherished grandfather of Jean (Glenn), Mara (Matthew), Ayla (Christopher) and great-grandson Benjamin. He is survived by his loving sister Isobel Campbell of Scotland. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by many of his extended family in Scotland, England and Canada, special friends in Cuba and co-workers across the country. Many thanks from the family to Leslie Koziel and Kathy Neumann, your commitment and focus on caring for Harry and Margaret in this trying time is very much appreciated and your efforts exceptional. Harry led a fruitful life and was blessed with love from many. No more negotiations Dad...rest your mind and sing a happy tune. I'll be listening for you. Cremation to take place. A celebration of Harry's life to be held at a date yet to be determined, a notice will be posted. In lieu of flowers, donation to the Alzheimer's Society of Ontario would be appreciated. I was lucky to work with Harry Hynd at the United Steelworkers District 6 office both when he was assistant to USW District 6 Director Leo Gerard, and when Harry himself became Director.

He was calm, kind, and he was a tremendous colleague who was devoted to the union’s mission.

I learned so much from working with him and from watching how he dealt with challenges to the union and its members. Harry encouraged and supported my independent decisions but also provided me with stellar guidance and direction when my decisions or one of our campaigns went sideways.

He had a great sense of humour, he loved to laugh, and admirably he did not invest much in appearances of rank or title in the union. I loved that about the man.

Harry and Margaret took a genuine interest in my family, and so my partner Ruth and our daughters also send their deep condolences.

Harry, I’ll miss you.

Margaret and family my condolences on behalf of all of the members in District 3.

Harry was a wonderful friend and I am fortunate to say one of my mentors.

Harry brought out the best in people and often challenged all of us to do better in ways that were thoughtful and effective.

I was lucky to call Harry a friend and when he became the Director in District 3 had the opportunity to work directly with Harry. He ability to lead and teach was a talent that is rarely seen.

Margaret you two were wonderful together and worked as a couple whether it was union issues, party concerns or just your concerns for others. Thank you for all of your love and attention to Harry especially when his health began to fail. I know he appreciated all you did.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful person with all of us. RIP Harry.

Anyone who worked with Harry will remember his sense of humor, generosity, patience and devotion to the best values of the union movement.
Ego never got in the way of accomplishing the job to be done when you worked with Harry. In a union with many leaders to admire, Harry was exemplary.

Harry was a consummate colleague and mentor. I learned an enormous amount from him about trade unionism, leadership and integrity. He modelled staff rep conduct, toughness, commitment and honesty for so many who benefited from contact with him. I am grateful to have known him for so long and to have had the privilege of his friendship and brotherhood. My sincerest sympathies to Margaret and to his entire extended family and my thanks to Leslie and Kathy for their commitment to him and to his family during Harry's super senior years. A life well lived which is the most that life offers anyone.

Dear Margaret,
My sincerest condolences to you and your family. For nearly 40 years you have heard me tell you and Harry that he was my favorite staff rep. He came into our 25 week strike in '86 as a "troubleshooter", and we all trusted and respected his directness and honesty. His experience was invaluable. He also had a twinkle in his eye and a great sense of humor. And, finally, I thoroughly enjoyed backing his vocals on my guitar on many occasions. A real gentleman, may he rest in peace.

Dear Margret;
The passing of your beloved husband and my dear friend Harry has moved me deeply. Harry had a huge bearing in the future of my roll with the USW and beyond. He must have seen something that caused him to be a benefactor.
I understand that I was certainly not the first nor the last that he did so. I will miss him dearly and think of you and Harry often. Take care.

Dear Margaret and family, I am sorry for your loss. Over the years, I came to look upon Harry as a mentor. I admired how he treated everyone in the same way – with respect, good humour, and humility. Harry was a great person and also a fine leader. Working people across Canada will be forever in his debt. All who have had the privilege of serving the labour movement with Harry will remember him always with great fondness.

I will always remember Harry fondly for our many years working together at the EI Board of Referees. Harry was always soft spoken, gentle and kind hearted - a true gentleman. He often spoke about his long career in the labour movement, his trips abroad and most of all, his cherished and lovely wife, Margaret. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
