Joan Harkness (nee Elvins), in her 88th year passed away peacefully on February 22, 2021. Beloved wife for 61 years to the late Bob and mother to Andrew (Karen) and Ian (Shirley and daughter Jenna). Nana to Tyler (Alex), Laura, and Jocelyn and great-nana to Hudson, Levi and Sophia. Joan is survived by her loving sister Barb and brother-in-law Joe (Polasek) and late brother Wayne (Naomi). Joan was retired, after many years in the teaching profession. She spent her free and retirement dedicated to the Cub Scout movement, Barton Stone United Church, supporting Wesley Urban Ministries, cooking, painting and traveling the world with Bob. It didn't matter what event, adventure or discovery of nature Joan was a part of, she always needed her picture or it never happened. A celebration of life will be held at Barton Stone United Church, 21 Stone Church Road West (at Upper James), Hamilton at a post-Covid future date. Donations can be made in memory of Joan to Barton Stone United Church, through Merritt Funeral Home. merritt-fh.com

I know you know how blessed you were to have Joan as your mother, and I know how blessed I was to be loved by her , too. Greatness of spirit, that's Joan. Be strong, like her. You are part of a good community.
My husband didn't get to know Joan and Bob, but he's grateful that they had an influence on me. She had what it takes to be a wise woman, wife, mother and grandmother. Susan and Pierre Nicole

Dear Andrew, Karen, Ian Shirley and family,
We were so saddened to hear about Mrs. H's passing. She always treated me like a daughter and as neighbours who always loved in the same house we always knew she loved us all too. I had a pet through her, I got to look after and walk Copper and Sam for many years. She always had something special for me on my birthday and Christmas. We enjoyed many summer days by the pool and bbq's and even Christmas carols during the holidays. I treasure those times of fellowship and love, always a heart for helping others. Your parents always were there after dads stroke and we enjoyed some really wonderful days and chocolate cake too! My children loved them both and enjoyed swimming every summer. I have a video of Rachel who was not even 2 she had on her life eat and a little floaty and she jumped off and I to the deep end and your mom and dad could not believe she just went in and loved it! In and out she went, off the board and swimming to the ladder and out again and again! She loved out kids and always asked how they were doing and always came out with tea and drinks. Such sweet memories, so blessed we are all to have known her. Loved and missed but never forgotten and forever in our hearts. Michelle and Mark Verwey( Mark Jr, David, Christopher, Nathan and Rachel( she was thrilled when we finally had a girl! I still have the outfit she bought her,)
